Job Description

The UN Global Compact Network UK (GCN UK) is part of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest responsible business initiative. We connect UK companies, academic institutions, and other organisations in a global movement dedicated to driving sustainable development.

The UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, rooted in UN treaties, provide a robust foundation from which we drive progress on the Global Goals, also called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our mission is to turn global momentum on sustainability into practical local action.

This role will also entail supporting activities of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Chapter UK and Ireland, one of 16 Regional Chapters of the UN Global Compact's PRME movement (established 2007). PRME's mission is to transform management education and develop the responsible decision-makers of tomorrow to advance sustainable development.

The Chapter seeks to nurture a mutually supportive community of committed responsible management educators and researchers by delivering a varied programme of activity that includes local implementation of the global PRME i5 and PRME Global Students initiatives.

Our work is guided by the core values of the UN – Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity – and nine additional values and behaviours of the UN Global Compact. Find out more here.

Please note that while this role is within the UN Global Compact Network UK Secretariat, the successful candidate will not be formally employed by the United Nations. You can find information about the UN Global Compact Network UK's governance here and information about the PRME Chapter here.

We offer the option of hybrid working, but with ideally a minimum of two days per week in the office. We are also a Living Wage Employer: https://www.livingwage.org.uk/ The London Living Wage is currently £11.95/hour which equates to £23,300 p.a.

We are seeking an Intern to support the work of the UN Global Compact Network UK Participant Engagement Team and PRME Chapter programming. This is a full-time internship of at least 6 months with the possibility of extension and/or conversion into a permanent role.

Please note that while this role is within the UN Global Compact Network UK Secretariat, the successful candidate will not be formally employed by the United Nations.

We are looking for:

  • Someone that is well organised, as you will be working on multiple projects concurrently.

  • Someone with impeccable business writing skills and attention to detail.

  • Someone that has a "customer service orientation" and is able to anticipate the needs of colleagues and external stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with planning and delivering virtual and in-person events would be a bonus.

This is a great opportunity for someone seeking a career in corporate responsibility and/or sustainable development.

During your internship:

We'll need you to get settled quickly. Through online training and meetings with relevant colleagues, we'll help you to become familiar with our way of working and all the programming offered by the UN Global Compact Network UK, the PRME Chapter, and our colleagues at UN HQ.

After your onboarding, you might be asked to engage in a range of tasks including:

  • Responding effectively to emailed or telephoned inquiries from Network and Chapter participants.

  • Carry out due diligence checks on organisations applying to join the UN Global Compact.

  • Deliver admin support for the PRME i5 business education skills project amongst business school signatories to PRME.

  • Contribute to and coordinate the production of marketing and information materials, including social media and website updates. This will include: writing draft copy in response to briefs, chasing colleagues for their content contributions, assembling and formatting these contributions, proofreading, and providing relevant colleagues with drafts for review.

  • Assisting with organising and delivering live events and webinars.

  • Additional ad hoc tasks as required by the Vice-Chair of the PRME Chapter and Network Operations Manager.

What are next steps?

If you proceed with your application, you'll be asked to complete an equal opportunities questionnaire. The main reason we're using the Applied platform is to eliminate bias from our hiring process, so it's really important that we have this information so we can see if it's working. We will only ever see stats about groups and never about you; answering these questions will never have an impact on your application.

Next we'll collect some essential admin information.

Finally, we will ask you to answer four questions designed to test your ability to do the job. Please give it your best effort, your scores on these questions will be the primary consideration in whether you are invited for an interview. To avoid bias, we don't look at CVs until later in the process.

Every application will be scored, and you will receive feedback.

Good luck!
