Job Description

Would you like to work to advocate for something that makes a positive difference to peoples’ lives?

Health and Protection products genuinely help people in times of great distress. They help get people back into the workplace after illness, provide a safety net for when they can’t, and ensure families have financial support after the loss of a loved one.

As Policy Adviser, you’ll report to the Manager, Health and Protection and work as part of a close-knit team to be the face of the ABI in representing our members in the Health and Protection market. You’ll ensure the positive role played by insurers in supporting individuals, households, employers, wider society and the economy is properly represented. Some of your key workstreams will be developing and managing policy initiatives across patient safety, health data sharing, mental health, and employee health and wellbeing.

Please note this is full time role but we are open to applications from those who wish to work on a flexible and/or job share basis. The role is due to start in early 2021 and is a fixed term contract until the end of 2021.

Your role:

  • Work with colleagues to increase consumer, political and media understanding of the role health and protection insurance plays in supporting the mental, physical and financial health of society.

  • Engage with ABI members, stakeholders and government officials in the development of policy, using data, research and analytical skills to develop credible solutions to real problems.

  • Facilitate, contribute to and present at ABI committees and workshops, to explore problems, develop solutions, build consensus and advocate the ABI’s position.

  •  Work with ABI colleagues to develop the ABI’s voice and role as an active partner of Government in promoting good mental and physical health.

  •  Ensure ABI members receive clear, relevant and engaging information on our health and protection work and issues.

  • Act as an effective external representative of the ABI and the insurance industry by undertaking speaking engagements and media appearances.

  • Organise, run and present at events for members and stakeholders.

The role is primarily based in London, however. Due to COVID-19, all colleagues are currently working from home. If you would like to know more about how we’ve adapted, take a look at our blog.

We’re looking for:

You’ll be comfortable handling multiple priorities and facilitating meetings with your various stakeholders to arrive at desired outcomes. A confident, persuasive and friendly communication style will stand you in good stead, both with your stakeholders and colleagues, to help you navigate policy issues and build consensus on a way forward. Alongside this, you’ll also need excellent project management and analysis skills to be able to digest complex information quickly and make it engaging and accessible for others. You don’t need to have worked in insurance previously to apply.

For applications, the minimum requirements are:

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Experience of leading and analysing complex public policy issues and/or strong project management experience

  • Enthusiasm for building and managing effective and positive relationships

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong attention to detail.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate the ABI’s values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.
