The Role

We are seeking a Closing Specialist with NMTC experience who will play a central role in the success and growth of its Lending and Investing Team.  The Closing Specialist oversees the closing, on-boarding, and off-boarding of New Markets Tax Credit and lower middle market loan transactions. The Specialist will work closely with deal teams consisting of originations, credit, and portfolio management as well as other functional teams such as Fund Administration, Treasury, Impact Management, Fund Management, and Corporate Accounting. 

What You’ll Do

Closing and Payoff Coordination and Communication

  • Working with the Deal Team Lead and outside counsel, ensure that required information and documents are received by various parties involved in the transaction

  • Maintain an internal closing and payoff checklist and hold NMSC staff accountable for required actions and information submission; synchronize with overall transaction closing and payoff checklist

  • Engage outside insurance consultant during closing and ensure insurance approval prior to loan closings

  • When applicable, engage construction inspector and coordinate ongoing review (plan and cost review, monthly inspection reports)

  • Attend closing and payoff calls and maintain calendar of closings and anticipated payoffs

Documentation

  • Maintain a library of frequently used NMSC corporate and transaction documents; and, create deal specific documents from templates

  • Coordinate with outside counsel to make sure documents are routed to correct internal and external parties for review and signature

  • Review closing and payoff documentation for accuracy and obtain internal sign-off as required

  • Oversee document retention for closing documents

  • Ensure appropriate legal entities are dissolved, bank accounts are closed, and payoff details are recorded

Funding

  • Provide Treasury team with needed information and liaise with borrowers, clients, and banks to ensure accurate execution of funds flow

Onboarding and Transition to Asset Management

  • Obtain post-close follow-up documents and information

  • Coordinate a post-closing introduction call with borrower and transition to internal teams

  • Enter transaction details into NMSC’s proprietary portfolio management software, CDFI Fund’s Portal (AMIS), and update pipeline, closing, and payoff reports

  • Act as administrator for file sharing portal

Who We’re Looking For

  • Commitment to NMSC’s mission and to work with diverse low-income communities

  • Experience with New Markets Tax Credit financing is strong preference

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, manage time and resources to complete work efficiently and within established timeframes

  • Experience coordinating deal closing process from pre-approval intake through underwriting, closing, and funding, and then efficiently handing off to portfolio management

  • High level of attention to detail

  • Comfort utilizing technology for process improvement

  • Demonstrated ability to work with customer and deal counterparties in a friendly and productive fashion

  • Ability to work in a remote, team-based environment

  • Highly proficient in MS Excel and Word is essential; familiarity with AirTable.com is helpful

Location/Travel

While our office is in Chicago, this position can be based anywhere in the United States. The role will involve periodic travel to Chicago.
