Job Description

About Dark Matter Capital Systems (DmCS)

We are a discovery engine for a life-affirming future of finance.

Dark Matter Capital Systems (DmCS) is part of Dark Matter Labs and works to reimagine and rewire financial systems so that they serve life across generations, species, and systems. We are not interested in incremental change or technical fixes alone—we are committed to building the conditions in which regenerative, plural, and place-rooted futures can not just be imagined but become inevitable.

We engage in deep place-based work across neighbourhoods, cities, and bioregions, learning through practice, testing new capital infrastructures, and shaping new narratives. Our work is relational, experimental, and rooted in care, rigour, and courage.

About this role

This role is for someone who’s mastered the mechanics of finance (infrastructure, real estate, project development) and is ready to apply that expertise to a new kind of challenge.

Through the Nature Demo collaboration, we are building a Finance Hub to support nature-based solutions (NbS) for infrastructure stakeholders across Europe. Your work will help bridge technical finance, emerging policy, and long-term ecosystem logic. It’s about giving these stakeholders the tools, language, and financial strategy to unlock capital, and making sure those mechanisms hold under pressure. You’ll work hands-on with pilot projects, helping identify viable funding pathways and co-investment models. You’ll help us test and prototype new capital stack configurations.

While the Nature Demo project is focused on infrastructure stakeholders, we believe true transformation happens in place, i.e. at the neighbourhood, city, or bioregional scale. We seek someone who can integrate this broader, holistic view into reshaping individual investment flows. We don’t expect you to come in literate in systems-change vocabulary, but you should be keen to learn fast.

While the initial focus of this role will be on the Nature Demo collaboration, we can explore opportunities to lead on other projects related to nature, NbS, and bioregional finance.

How the time is structured
  • Expect around 2 days per week, flexed to suit the project rhythm. Some weeks will be light, others will require deep focus and strategic response. We’ll work with you to find the right tempo.

You might thrive in this role if...
  • You’ve worked in infrastructure or project finance and understand the complexity behind public-private capital flows

  • You can design and test real-world financial strategies; not just critique the system, but build within and beyond it.

  • You’re curious about natural systems, adaptation, and regenerative infrastructure, even if you haven’t worked on it yet.

  • You’re patient with bureaucracy but not absorbed by it. You know how to deliver in consortium settings without losing clarity.

  • You don’t need to lead every room. You ask good questions. You do what you said you’d do.

  • You’re collaborative, dependable, and willing to grow.

What you’ll actually be doing
  • Supporting the setup and delivery of the NbS Finance Hub: helping develop guidance, templates, and financial support structures which will be packaged into a final report.

  • Working directly with a small set of pilot projects to identify co-investment approaches, funding pathways, and practical models for both capex and opex.

  • Translating between the logic of infrastructure finance and the specific needs of nature-based solutions including how to quantify, bundle, or layer ecosystem services.

  • Monitoring the funding landscape (public, private, philanthropic) to help project developers access viable capital.

  • Collaborating with the DmCS team on adjacent experiments in fund and capital stack design as well as other innovative financing mechanisms like ecosystem service tokenisation.

  • Attending bi-weekly consortium partner meetings, and two trips annually for consortium-wide meetings

Who you’ll work with
  • Leon, who stewards DmCS and brings strategic and technical oversight

  • Other parts of the DmCS team, including capital markets, investment, and financial design experts

  • Partners from other Nature Demo consortium organisations (policy, research, cities, project developers)

You’ll also be accompanied by a wider group of Dm Citizens committed to doing meaningful work in complex systems.

Practical details
  • Start: Target Q3 2025

  • Duration: Project runs through 2028

  • Contract: UK payroll preferred (for grant simplicity), but open to freelance arrangements

  • Location: Europe-focused; remote work is the norm

  • Language: English essential; German, Spanish, or other languages welcome

This role is for someone with deep skills and deep integrity. You know how to build financial tools that work. Now, you want that work to serve a different future.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to talk.
