Job Description

Slow Ways is a visionary initiative to create a national walking and wheeling network. We are working to inspire more people to walk and wheel more often, further, and for more purposes.

Unfortunately, sometimes things get in the way.

Thanks to funding from Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Open Fund we are developing a new online project that will enable people to suggest, map and discuss routes they would like to be able to travel - but can’t because something is in the way. There may be something blocking a path or there might not be a way at all.

We are looking for a skilled coordinator, advocate and champion who can lead this project for us in Scotland. The project covers all of Scotland and has a special focus on deprived areas. This is a flexible, hybrid and part-time contract role. Both individuals and organisations may apply.

We are especially interested to hear from people who have lived experiences that are relevant to the ambitions of this role.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading on the project’s interactions with individuals and organisations.

  • Working with our technologists to ensure the project meets the needs of present and future walkers, wheelers and land managers in Scotland,

  • Establishing and coordinating a forum of people and organisations to feed into the development of the project and benefit from it.

  • Advocating for people with different needs.

  • Developing resources that sign-post and advise people on how they can improve the accessibility of paths or get new ones created.

  • Managing the community of people who contribute to the project.

  • Helping to champion and promote the project.

  • Working with an independent evaluator to assess the effectiveness of the project.

Desirable skills include your ability to:

  • Be positive, optimistic and help people imagine alternative futures.

  • Manage projects.

  • Advise on how paths can be made more accessible and inclusive.

  • Communicate why new and better paths are needed.

  • Establish effective forums of individuals and organisations.

  • Maintain positive and mutualistic relationships with partners.

  • Advocate for people.

  • Manage an online community.

  • Organise and host both online and physical workshops.

  • Write clearly, effectively and with easy to understand language.

  • Work within a tech start-up project and feel confident working with web developers and GIS experts.

  • Remember names, pick up the phone and talk to people.

  • Have both an eye for detail and be able to think large-scale and long-term.

This is a part-time contract role that initially runs through to the end of February 2024. Depending on how the project goes there are possibilities for the role to be continued, grown or made permanent.

Slow Ways does not have an office in Scotland. You will usually work from home.

We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
