Job Description
The Company
Usborne is an independent, family business, creating books which spark curiosity in children of all ages. These range from books for babies such as the bestselling THAT’S NOT MY®… series of touchy-feely books, to YA fiction from acclaimed authors such as Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé and Ravena Guron – with everything from Sticker Dolly Dressing to Philosophy for Beginners in between.
You can see our books here at www.usborne.com
Whilst the company is now a market-leader in children’s publishing and one of the best-known brands in children’s books globally, the company retains a friendly and familial feel. If you want to work somewhere close-knit enough for people to know your name, but which has a first-class reputation around the world, Usborne is the place for you.
The Role
This role sits at the heart of how we bring our books to market. As our Territory representative across London and the South-East, you'll manage and develop relationships with independent booksellers and specialist retailers, working with customers who care deeply about what they sell and why.
It's a role that combines careful account management with proactive new business development, and one where you'll work closely with internal teams to plan activity, support promotions and make the most of every commercial opportunity across your territory.
What you'll be doing
Managing and developing sales across independent and specialist retail accounts
Building relationships with existing customers while identifying and securing new ones
Planning and delivering regular customer visits, presentations and seasonal pitches
Working with Marketing and Publicity to support promotions, events and in-store activity
Liaising with distribution partners and supporting order processes
Feeding back market insight, customer intelligence and territory observations to the wider team
Representing Usborne at trade shows and industry events
About you
You'll be a confident, self-motivated relationship-builder with genuine commercial awareness and a real interest in children's books and the wider retail environment. You might be stepping across from a territory, area or key account sales role within publishing, or bringing a different angle as a buyer in book retail. Either way, we're looking for someone with:
Proven experience managing and growing customer accounts
Strong sales, negotiation and presentation skills
The organisation and initiative to manage a busy territory independently
Confidence with digital tools and social media in a customer-facing context
An interest in children's publishing and the wider book trade
Willingness and ability to travel regularly across London and the South-East
A full UK driving licence
Location and Benefits
This role is based at our offices in Farringdon, London, with regular time spent across your territory visiting customers. It's not a home-based position, but the nature of territory sales means your working pattern will flex around customer visits, travel and office time. You can expect a genuine mix, with the expectation that you're in the office regularly and a connected part of the team.
In addition to our transparent salary grading structure, for this role we also offer a range of benefits which include:
25 days paid holiday entitlement plus bank holidays – rising to 30 days with service
Industry-leading Pension Scheme and Life Assurance.
Employee Assistance Programme and Mental Health First Aiders.
Healthcare Cashback scheme.
Virtual GP service.
Enhanced Family Friendly benefits.
Paid Volunteer Day.
Rewards and Discount services and shopping.
Cycle to Work Scheme.
75% discount on Usborne books.
Recruitment Process
We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role and therefore applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK at the point of application.
We expect to undertake first round interviews in person from the middle of May onwards with a further interview shortly after.
Please let us know if you require reasonable adjustments at any point during the application and/or recruitment process.
Usborne is dedicated to building a diverse taskforce that reflects the wide range of communities that read our books globally. Decisions are made based on the individual’s skills and experiences and we particularly encourage applications from underrepresented demographics in Publishing.
