Job Description

 In alignment with Carey’ Health and Safety system SHED (“Safe Home Every Day”) and relevant policies and procedures, The Assistant Quantity Surveyor is responsible for assisting the Commercial Manager/Quantity Surveyor with the day to day administration of the commercial function on the Project(s).

In building a deeper understanding of the administrative requirements of the commercial function, the AQS will:

·       Develop a basic understanding of the scope of works and commercial and contractual requirements.

·       Proactively seek involvement in, and begin to demonstrate a competency with the execution of external valuations, including re-measures and the pricing of variations

·       Start to demonstrate confidence and competency, with minimal input from the CM/QS, with the procurement and administration of subcontractors

·       Demonstrate initiative and desire around supporting, mentoring and coaching Graduates & Trainees and assist with role specific training.

·       Demonstrate the ability to interface with and form productive, effective relationships with the site team(s), successfully extracting relevant information from the site team(s) to assist with incorporation into the account.

·       Develop a deeper understanding around the valuation cycle and associated deadlines, prioritising and managing own time accordingly

 

Main Responsibilities

In line with SHED and Careys’ relevant policies and procedures, the Assistant Quantity Surveyor responsibilities will include the following:

Stakeholder Management

·       Attend design team and Client progress meetings as required

Cost Management, Reporting and Supporting

·       Understand/follow commercial procedures – consistently and on time

·       Assist with the provision of concise and accurate reports for cost/value, cost monitoring, etc

·       Assist in the preparation of monthly management reports when instructed

·       Produce monthly record drawings detailing site progress

·       Monthly production of drawings of work projected to be done by the month end for inclusion in the monthly valuation

·       Co-ordination and collation of weekly progress photographs of work on site

·       Assist with the preparation of monthly valuations, financial statements, etc

·       Monthly production of a schedule of materials on site for inclusion in the application

·       If applicable the monthly production of a schedule of materials off site and vesting certificate for inclusion in the application

Change Management

·       Assist with management and support of commercial variation cost and recovery

·       re-measure as necessary and adjust variations

·       Assist with the preparation of estimates and cost plans required by the Client

Procurement

·       Assist with Subcontract/Special Supplies procurement including the preparation and maintenance of a Subcontract Letting schedule, sending out enquires, analysis of quotes, attending pre-contract meetings getting the necessary approvals and placing Subcontract orders

Sub-Contract/Special Supplies Administration

·       Assist with the administration of subcontracted works and Special Supplies, including monitoring progress and workmanship and issuing payment notices

·       Assist with the preparation of notices and other correspondence to Subcontractors

·       Measurement of subcontractors under re-measurable contracts

Contractual Compliance, Quality and Risk Management

·       Understand scope and remit and ‘own the role’

·       Assist with providing specialist contractual advice and direction

·       Participate in contract reviews where required

·       Contribute to lessons learned report for post contract review

·       Provide support to promote timely and commercially acceptable resolutions to claims or mitigation of potential claims

·       Assist in the settlement of construction disputes and prepare and agree final accounts

Collaboration and Teamwork

·       Act in accordance with the Quantity Surveyors instructions

·       Support junior trainee’s development and check work for accuracy and timeliness

·       Being familiar with, and compliant with, Careys’ SHED and promoting a culture of HSE awareness within the team

·       Performing other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time by your manager

Desirable Skills & Experience

·     Degree qualified in a quantity surveying subject (or completing a degree this year) or alternatively ONC / HND Qualification and 2/3 years’ relevant experience

·     Strong numeracy skills

·     Good report writing skills

·     Ability to prioritise and work under pressure

·     Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and clients

·     Good presentation skills
