We are Public Digital, a digital transformation consultancy and we help global institutions that matter thrive in the internet era. We apply the culture, processes, business models and technologies to help teams build and run excellent public services. Working with the leaders doing strategy, and the teams doing delivery, we operate globally, advising large organisations and governments on six continents.

We’re values-driven and we articulated them in our ‘positions’ on the Public Digital website.

Attitude as much as skill, is critically important to us as a team and we look for entrepreneurialism, initiative, kindness, and a willingness to pitch in. Our theory of change is: Digital. Teams. Work - we fundamentally believe transformation is about people, and that change comes from creating great teams and empowering them.

Role overview

As a Digital Development Lead, you will play a key role in delivering and scaling our portfolio of international work. You will lead partnerships with development banks, UN agencies, global philanthropic foundations, and national and state governments in Africa and South/Southeast Asia. This is a fantastic opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader looking to grow their career in digital development.

Most of your time will be spent leading client engagements and building strong, pragmatic working relationships with leaders and digital practitioners in large, complex organisations. Supporting organisations and institutions by applying expertise in digital strategy, portfolio management, agile delivery and digital technology to catalyse institutional reform, transform services, and improve millions of people’s lives. You will develop and support our rapid growth by generating and developing new leads, and help strengthen our global reputation.

What we’re looking for

You are a ‘T’ shaped person. You have deep experience in either digital development policy or in a specific digital discipline, such as product management, agile delivery, service design, or software development. You are comfortable working across a wide range of engagements, from long-term technical assistance programmes working with governments to improve their digital capabilities, to shorter-term digital strategy and research projects with development partners. You have a strong understanding of the digital development landscape globally, with first-hand experience working on digital initiatives in Africa or South/Southeast Asia. You are purpose-driven and have strong commercial acumen.

What you’ll do for us:

  • Lead significant client engagements, developing strong, proactive and highly trusted relationships with senior leaders and their teams

  • Proactively generate new business development leads from your network and collaboratively with others help to convert these into new engagements

  • Build a comprehensive understanding of clients’ strategic direction, organisational context, operational/tactical issues and delivery goals

  • Advise development partners on their digital strategies and emerging policy issues

  • Help public sector institutions to dramatically increase their digital capability, deliver outcomes, and better experiences and impact for citizens

  • Develop Public Digital’s points of view on important digital development policy areas, such as the intersection of digital transformation with public finance or the climate crisis.

  • Develop your reputation as a thought leader in digital development: write blog posts and opinion pieces; speak at conferences and events as a representative of Public Digital

  • Contribute to the life and growth of Public Digital as a values-led business

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong understanding of the digital development ecosystem globally and especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and/or South/Southeast Asia

  • Firsthand experience starting and scaling digital products or other digital initiatives in low-income countries

  • A pre-existing strong network of funders within the development sector based on your personal credibility and influence. A track record of contributing to business development and partnerships to achieve new engagements worth at least $2m.

  • Excellent communicator, able to present convincingly and express arguments and information in a clear, concise manner, to a publishable standard, including articulating technical concepts.

  • Experienced and highly credible coach, facilitating teams to build capability, collaborate and become more self-organising.

  • A commitment to decolonization and localization of development programmes.

  • Knowledge of major trends and topics in digital development, such as digital public goods and digital public infrastructure.

  • Experience in a particular digital discipline – such as product management, service design, agile delivery, user research, or software development – is desirable.

  • Fluency in French and/or Portuguese is desirable.

What’s in it for you:

  • Opportunity to grow and progress rapidly within an engaged, supportive environment, by taking a leadership role in a fast-growing part of the business;

  • Be entrepreneurial and contribute to the growth and success of Public Digital;

  • Work across a variety of high-profile engagements with dynamic, committed clients and partners;

  • Buddy system and prioritised mental health;

  • Generous holiday allowance (30 days plus public holidays);
