Job Description
ROLE
Luminate is seeking a collaborative, solutions-oriented professional who is committed to equitable evaluation principles and passionate about finding new ways to creatively consider and collect evidence for complex systems change.
The Manager will be closely involved in all Learning & Impact projects and processes and will lead organisational learning by creating new reflection activities for Luminate, organising and facilitating team “pause and reflect” sessions, leading ongoing evidence gathering, synthesizing data for learning and decision-making and providing project management for evidence collection, evaluations and bespoke external evidence collection projects.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Luminate is launching a new Learning Framework in 2022 and renewing its commitment to integrating learning into organisational practices. This new staff role will be key to implementing the new framework and will pioneer a new learning approach across the organisation, activating the nascent Learning Framework into a tool that promotes robust inquiry and reflection and connects insights to decision-making. The role will apply systems and complexity thinking to measurement, as we seek to examine our change through hypotheses rather than static metrics.
TEAM
The Manager will report to the Director, Learning & Impact and be an integral member of the Luminate team. This position is based in a Luminate geographic hub: ideally São Paulo, Brazil, Nairobi, Kenya, or Singapore; London, UK or Washington, DC can also be considered. Candidates must be based in one of these 5 locations and have the right to work in the location where they reside.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the design and implementation of Luminate’s learning agenda
Help design an overall approach for team learning, taking into account systems change principles, Luminate’s geographically distributed model, a variety of learning styles and online/ hybrid approaches.
Facilitate a wide range of internal learning & reflection conversations, drawing on Emergent Learning principles, equitable participation, and best practice in adult learning.
Identify opportunities for “ad hoc” and one-off reflection sessions and facilitate timely conversations to capture fresh insights.
Summarise and share learnings within and across Luminate’s teams, helping teams apply their learning to strategic decision-making.
Assist Luminate’s Partner Support team as they plan strategic Learning and Impact activities for our partners/ grantees.
Support and advance Luminate’s Learning & Impact agenda by participating in sessions with counterparts in The Omidyar Group and the wider sector.
Manage Luminate’s Learning Framework
Support evidence gathering for Luminate’s Learning Framework, which contains evidence related to organisational and team hypotheses, ensuring that the evidence collected is timely, robust and thorough.
Work closely with Luminate’s regional and programmatic teams as they develop learning agendas and gather evidence related to their hypotheses, helping them identify biases and gaps in their evidence and helping them commission additional data collection.
Regularly review each team’s evidence and work with Learning and Impact lead to synthesise progress and lessons learnt for Luminate’s Leadership Team and Board.
Manage Luminate’s partner reporting process
Review Luminate’s current partner reporting process and propose adjustments to reduce reporting burden on partner organisations while contributing to organisational learning.
Solicit feedback from partners on reporting templates.
Work with Funding Leads to pilot new reporting templates and revise as needed.
Support evaluation and research projects
Work closely with Learning & Impact team lead to monitor an organisational analytical framework which addresses Luminate’s learning questions and tests our thinking.
Support the implementation of Luminate’s Grantee Perception Report study.
Support org-level and team research and evaluation projects by assisting with TOR development and project managing as needed.
Ensure that research and evaluation outputs are incorporated into Luminate’s Learning Framework and findings are shared across the team.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Several years in the fields of monitoring, evaluation and research, including experience in the philanthropic sector
Demonstrated experience with emergent learning and facilitating a wide variety of learning experiences
Strong analysis skills and ability to draw themes from multiple streams of formal and informal qualitative and quantitative evidence
Strong project management skills, including working with complex projects across multiple geographies
Excellent communicator (verbal and written); ability to convey complex material in presentations and via written summaries
Demonstrated experience with supporting evaluations and primary research projects
Demonstrated ability to work well with team members across multiple time zones, honouring diverse contexts while fostering a learning community
Experience in the thematic areas of democracy and governance
