Job Description

Investment Associate

AirTree is looking to add an Investment Associate to our team!

About AirTree

Based in Sydney, we’re one of the largest and most active venture capital funds in Australia and New Zealand. If you join us, you get to work with many of the most exciting startups in our region - Canva, A Cloud Guru, Secure Code Warrior, Prospa, Brighte, Athena, Joyous - the list goes on and on!  We raised our latest fund late 2019 and now manage over $600m.

We’re a down-to-earth team with a diverse set of backgrounds but the same passion: startups and technology. Our mission is to find and back the best Australian and Kiwi founders and help them achieve their vision. We are committed to building a world class VC platform in Australia. This is an opportunity to get involved early, help shape AirTree and make an impact on our region’s tech ecosystem.

We’ve written a lot about the work that we do at AirTree, check out our Medium page. Some key info to read: AirTree’s year in review 2019 and our team bios

About the role

This is a full time role.

We’re looking for someone with a true passion for startups, technology and shaping the future. You will become an integral part of our investment team and be involved in the entire process from sourcing, to investment, to working with our companies and helping them to succeed. You will be based in Sydney but will travel within Australia and beyond (Covid permitting!), as well as attend events and more.

What You’ll do

Your primary role will be to help find and evaluate startups for investment but there is much more to it than just that. Working together with the Partners at Airtree, you will:

  • help us find the next Aussie unicorn by proactively meeting new companies as well as reviewing incoming investment leads

  • help us prioritise the many opportunities that we see each month and conduct due diligence on early stage companies we are considering partnering with

  • represent AirTree at events and in the broader tech ecosystem

  • work together closely with our companies as they grow

  • build and maintain great relationships with various stakeholders in the ecosystem and help us build on our reputation for being a founder-friendly partner to some of the most successful startups in Aus.

About You

  • You have great passion and motivation - you’ll love getting out of the building and meeting the whole startup ecosystem, building a network of strong relationships and finding great founders

  • You are passionate and curious - you love technology; you read blogs, tech news sites  etc. because it’s fun, not because you have to; you’re fascinated by new technologies and what the world might look like in 10 years; you understand the key players and forces shaping the tech world

  • You are humble and helpful - you’re an empathetic person who founders want to work with; you build long lasting relationships; people like being around you

  • You thrive in a fast moving, unstructured environment - you love working in a fast-paced environment; you show initiative and don’t need someone to tell you what to do all the time

  • You are smart, thoughtful and perceptive - you’re comfortable quickly coming up to speed on different companies in various industries; you’re confident gathering and synthesising data and analyses and turning them into written (and oral) investment recommendations; you’re very comfortable in Excel, Google Docs and various other tools

In terms of your background, it’s likely you have 2-5 years’ experience and have worked in one of these environments before:

  • A startup or technology business.  If you’ve been involved in product or engineering, all the better

  • Another investment group, preferably focused on the Internet and software

  • An advisory business such as an investment bank or consulting firm, with a focus on the Internet and new technologies.

Flexibility and Benefits

AirTree is a flexible, family-friendly workplace - it's something we take very seriously and we think its key part of having an inclusive and happy work culture. To help with this, we are pleased to offer:

  • 4 weeks annual leave plus a bonus week of lifestyle and well-being leave

  • Paid parental leave of 16 weeks for the primary carer, (in line with our parental leave policy)

  • A supportive return-to-work policy

  • Annual budget for your training & self-development

Diversity and Inclusion

We celebrate and value diversity and we are committed to being inclusive in the way we hire and in the way our team works together.

We also strongly encourage you to apply even if you are not sure you fit all of the criteria we’ve mentioned. All our roles involve a range of skill sets and we recognise that everyone has different strengths and experiences that can add lots of value to our team.

How to Apply?

Please apply using the link above.

From the initial submissions we’ll select a smaller group for phone/video interviews with someone from our team or an external recruiting partner, Platinum Pacific, and then a set of finalists for in-person meetings. We hope to finish the process by the end of October 2020 and have you working with us as soon as possible after that.

We can’t wait to meet you!
