Job Description

Project Description

This project focuses on the feasibility analysis of multi-energy harvesting techniques for modular IoT sensors designed for being integrated in space assets. The applicant will explore energy harvesting methods suitable for space environments and assess their effectiveness in ensuring long operational lifetimes of sensors embedded in Large Space Structures or in small satellites. The project aims to align space, IoT and 6G's integrated approach to communications, sensing and energy harvesting.

Over the 8 weeks, we hope you will develop your skills and understanding in:

  • The applicant will develop a strong technical understanding of energy harvesting technologies, their integration with communication and sensing systems, and their application in space environments. This includes research skills, analytical capabilities, and familiarity with relevant space systems. Also, they will enhance their problem-solving abilities by evaluating the feasibility of these technologies in extreme conditions.

  • The applicant will work on communication and collaboration within an interdisciplinary team, presenting technical findings, and working in a highly dynamic and flexible environment. They will also gain experience in navigating the unique challenges of space environment, improving their ability to balance technological constraints with innovation. They will also learn about cutting-edge concepts in 6G, applying these to a practical space-based scenario

The successful applicant will have the following skills:

  • Academic Requirements: The applicant should be pursuing or have completed a degree in Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications or Space Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Coursework or experience related to energy harvesting, IoT, or space-based technologies would be highly advantageous.

  • Minimum Requirements: Strong analytical and research skills, familiarity with data analysis tools and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python). The applicant should demonstrate problem-solving abilities and an interest in space and sustainability.

  • Desirable Requirements: Familiarity with energy harvesting techniques and IoT networks, communications protocols and devices architecture. Experience with modelling and simulation tools will be beneficial.

  • Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
