Enhancing terrestrial mobile networks with satellite data is a key requirement in the roadmap of 6G networks.

Satellite data such as the motion of the satellites of the constellation and of all necessary characteristics (antenna characteristics, the link budget, the orientation of the beams and their footprint on the ground,) would allow to calculate the position of the different satellites of the constellation, but also the period of time during which the satellites are visible at a given terrestrial location.

Overall scope of this project is to deploy an satellite simulator server capable of modelling satellite constellations and dynamic satellite conditions which will provide all the required information to the Radio Access Network and Core. The satellite server will be integrated and be part of Catapult's NTN testbed.

The SPINtern will have the opportunity to acquire hands on experience in programming, 5G networks, virtualization platforms but also knowledge in satellite constellations.

Over the 8 weeks, we hope you will develop your skills and understanding in:

• Become familiar with satellite constellation characteristics, types of satellite constellations, ephemeris, beam, status etc

• Become familiar with basic mobile network concepts

• Collect all data to simulate a satellite constellation

• Deploy the satellite server using python

• The SPINtern will have the opportunity to acquire hands on experience in programming, but also knowledge in satellite and mobile networks.

• In addition successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers within Catapult’s y team and will have the opportunity to engage with industry and academia.

The successful applicant will have the following skills:

• Knowledge of linux O.S.

• Knowledge of programming python or any other language

• Knowledge of satellite networks and terrestrial networks is a plus

Process details:

• 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

• 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
