Job Description

About The Atmospheric Fund (TAF):

TAF is a regional climate agency that invests in low-carbon solutions for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and helps scale them up for broad implementation. We are experienced leaders and collaborate with stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors who have ideas and opportunities for reducing carbon emissions. We advance the most promising concepts by investing, providing grants, influencing policies and running programs. We’re particularly interested in ideas that offer benefits beyond carbon reduction such as improving people’s health, creating new green jobs, boosting urban resiliency, and contributing to a fair society. TAF is a proud member of the Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3) network.

Talk to our staff and they will tell you that working at TAF comes with amazing advantages. We’re on the leading edge of urban climate change solutions and our work makes a tangible difference. We build meaningful relationships with all kinds of stakeholders – from thought leaders advancing concepts to the people who implement change on the ground. Join our dedicated and collaborative team to contribute to the value and impact of our work.

About you and the role:

TAF’s Retrofit Accelerator puts ideas into action. We provide expert services to deliver deep energy retrofits in the multi-family building sector in the GTHA. We collaborate with building owners, utilities, governments, residents and other stakeholders to maximize the health, social, environmental, and economic outcomes of retrofits.

The Retrofit Accelerator team is growing to meet our objectives of scaling up the number of retrofit projects we support while delivering on related retrofit market development strategies. In this new role of Technical Services Manager, you’ll be responsible for coordinating and leading retrofit projects and strategic market development initiatives. Reporting to the Director, Low Carbon Buildings, you’ll provide direction, evaluation, and oversight of these critical initiatives as a technical lead. In your first year at TAF you’ll help hire and onboard at least one new team member who you will supervise and mentor.

What you’ll do:

Project and Relationship Management

  • Provide technical guidance on retrofit projects, overseeing deliverables, budgets, and coordinating project execution.

  • Develop specifications and manage procurement and contracting of retrofit goods and services.

  • Visit project sites to assess buildings, review progress and quality of work, and resolve challenges.

  • Manage and maintain relationships with retrofit service providers through procurement, contracting, and partnerships.

  • Develop, manage, and strengthen relationships with multi-unit residential building (MURBs) owners, including outreach and project support.

  • Cultivate relationships with building owners in the GTHA to secure agreements for deep retrofit projects.

Technical Leadership

  • Review and ensure the quality of design work and technical reports.

  • Support TAF’s technical building research, including topic development, methodology, data collection, analysis, collaboration, and documentation.

  • Lead initiatives that support the creation of a vibrant and efficient market for deep retrofit products and services.

  • Mentor junior staff and help to build their knowledge of building energy systems.

  • Analyze data from building energy systems.

  • Provide feedback on technical reports and submissions from grantees and external stakeholders.

  • Stay updated on decarbonization and Indoor Environmental Quality research and technologies. Identify innovative systems and technologies for TAF retrofits.

Communications Support

  • Support communications and knowledge transfer around TAF’s building sector initiatives, including internal projects, and projects funded by TAF grants. This can involve creating white papers, blog posts, case studies, journal papers and other forms of communication documenting project outcomes. It also includes presenting at conferences and events, being available for media interviews, and sharing insights with the internal team.

  • Support the development and implementation of project communications plans in coordination with TAF’s Senior Manager, Campaigns and Communications.

 General

  • Supervise Building Researchers and Analysts, including facilitating progress and work plan meetings, reviewing work, and providing coaching and feedback.

  • Support the development and review of funder reports and deliverables.

  • Represent TAF professionally in public settings.

  • Actively participate in staff meetings, retreats and through ad hoc working groups.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to find synergies among program areas.

The kind of skills and experience we’re looking for:

  • Master’s degree in environmental science, engineering, building science, or a closely related field, or an undergraduate degree with equivalent direct work experience.

  • Experience working with building energy systems and data. Energy modelling experience is beneficial. CEM or CMVP certification preferred.

  • At least three years of project leadership / management experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise in energy efficiency in the built environment and building energy systems.

  • Technical and analytical proficiency building energy and consumption analysis, statistics, energy modeling, financial evaluation, and systems monitoring.

  • Fully versed in qualitative and quantitative research methods, evaluation, instrumentation, software tools, and data gathering approaches.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate technical topics into practical and understandable language for a variety of audiences.

  • Expert level analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to exercise mature judgement, initiative, diplomacy, and tact.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines; prioritize and juggle multiple tasks.

  • Prior supervisory experience an asset.

  • Valid driver’s license is an asset.

What's in it for you:

In addition to your salary, you'll benefit from:
