Job Description
Project Description
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals are ubiquitous and frequently relied upon for navigation, and interest in their utility as a source of data for remote sensing applications has been growing over several decades. GNSS reflectometry (GNSS-R) describes using these signals to monitor a variety of Earth and climate characteristics, by measuring the signal properties subsequent to their reflection from the Earth’s surface. This internship will take the form of a project with the aim of identifying use cases for GNSS-R aligning with the Satellite Applications Catapult’s Missions and Interventions, and investigating methods for acquiring and processing GNSS-R measurements.
Over the 8 weeks, we hope you will develop your skills and understanding in:
Use cases and performance levels for GNSS-R techniques
Sources of GNSS-R data relevant to the identified use cases, including terrestrial, airborne and space-borne
Data processing methods and their applications
The challenges associated with signals of opportunity utilisation
Opportunities for combining GNSS-R data with that derived from other satellite sources
Providing business and technical recommendations for continuing the work, including the identification of opportunities for innovation
As a part of the Sustainable Earth Mission, you will work with colleagues across multiple disciplines, and the output of the project will be a report summarising the research and analysis carried out, aimed at stakeholders with various areas of expertise.
You will also regularly interact with colleagues during your project, and there will be opportunities to present your conclusions and recommendations.
We may look to adapt the project plan to best suit the successful applicant's experience at the start of the placement.
The successful applicant will have the following skills:
The candidate will be undertaking a degree in physics, engineering, environmental science, geography or a related discipline.
The successful applicant will be a confident systems thinker, and be able to apply their knowledge across multiple domains.
Knowledge of the use of satellite data for sustainability applications is desirable.
Process details:
8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate
5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
