Job Description



Working in a team of eight and reporting to the Foundation Director, you will contribute to the effective and efficient grantmaking of The Clothworkers’ Foundation by leading its monitoring, learning, and improvement activities.

Strategy Setting & Implementation Support

  • Lead on developing learning goals for our Open and Proactive grants programmes as part of The Foundation’s strategy and business plan, in partnership with grantmaking colleagues

  • Support implementation of strategy across The Foundation, particularly leading on data collection, analysis and reporting to meet learning goals

  • Support our Foundation Director in undertaking Strategic Reviews, developing Foundation Strategy (every 3-5 years), and annual business plans and budgets (every year)

 Monitoring & Evaluation of Foundation activities

  • Develop and oversee the way that The Clothworkers’ Foundation monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of individual grants, and overall funding programmes, including whether these reach all the communities we seek to support

  • Creating reports on progress against delivery of strategy and business plan, budget and learning goals for the Foundation Director and Trustees

  • Work with grantmaking colleagues to enable good database management, implement changes to forms and dashboards where necessary, and manage our relationship with our database supplier

  • Meeting The Foundation’s external reporting needs (e.g., 360 Giving, Funders For Race Equality data audit)

  • Support the commissioning/management of external evaluations or learning partners as necessary

  • Support other members of the Grants Team to improve data capture, streamline processes, and make better use of IT


Driving Learning & Improvement

  • Develop, with the Foundation Director, a culture of learning and improvement through timely and relevant data outputs, and support for colleagues to reflect on outputs and identify next steps

  • Be aware of relevant external research and developments on issues within philanthropy and grantmaking, and use these to inform Foundation decision-making and approaches

  • To prepare recommendations for support and manage certain strategic grants and collaborations where they fit within a learning remit (e.g. Research, Development and Partnership grants)

Communications & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work with colleagues, including the Membership & Communications Manager, to support delivery of The Foundation's communications strategy, and particularly to share outputs from our monitoring and learning activities.

  • Communicate changes to strategy, priorities and guidelines effectively to external audiences as appropriate

  • Communicate learning to internal audiences (trustees, staff, stakeholders)

  • Preparing recommendation papers to Trustees of The Foundation as and when required, including for our Open Grant Programme as necessary, and prepare reports for the Court of The Clothworkers' Company.

  • Engage with other audiences as necessary to share our learning, and contribute to knowledge in the sector

 Line Management

  • This role currently has no line management responsibilities. The post holder would be responsible for the performance, development, and wellbeing of any Learning & Development staff recruited in the future.

Other Duties

  • Work with our Foundation Director and senior colleagues to develop The Foundation’s culture in line with its values

  • Working with colleagues within The Clothworkers’ Company as required to enable our mutual aims

  • To represent The Clothworkers’ Foundation at events of The Clothworkers’ Company, as and when required

  • Representing The Clothworkers’ Foundation at external events as required

Person Specification

Essential Experience

  • At least two years' experience working in a relevant role, related to learning, and/or monitoring, and/or improvement

  • Experience of using databases to collect, extract, clean and analyse data and produce dashboards and reports to support understanding and decision-making for internal audiences

  • Experience of managing databases, including creating new forms and dashboards

  • Experience of shaping and delivering improvement projects, including supporting colleagues to implement change

  • Understanding of the grantmaking process

  • Experience working as part of a team and contributing to achieving team goals and decisions

  • Understanding of GDPR legislation and its impact on data collection and analysis activity

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of working in a grantmaking role

  • Experience of working as part of a team to develop, implement, and report progress against an organisational strategy

  • Experience of line management, and supporting/developing junior colleagues

  • Experience of commissioning and managing evaluators and/or learning partners to deliver projects, including using qualitative research

  • Experience of survey design

Essential Skills & Knowledge

  • Numerate

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • IT proficiency in MS Office applications including Excel and Power BI, and CRM software

Desirable Skills & Knowledge

  • Some knowledge of reporting tools such as Tableau, SQL, or Python

  • Blackbaud (GIFTS) CRM or other grantmaking database

  • Website content development and maintenance

  • Creating compelling data-led visual outputs, and using data for storytelling
