Job Description
Project Description:
The Civil Aviation Authority is responsible for licensing and monitoring space activities in the UK. As part of this effort, we are developing a series of software tools that use TLEs and ephemeris to detect when spacecraft perform manoeuvres and gain insight into on-orbit activities. The SPINtern would be responsible for extending the capabilities of these tools, or extracting insights into the data these tools produce.
The exact activities for the applicant will depend on the applicant’s knowledge, their interests and where they wish to develop their skills. However, tasks could include one or more of the following:
Conducting a literature review on methods for detecting satellite manoeuvres
Performing exploratory data analysis on orbit and manoeuvres data
Developing proof-of-concepts for advanced manoeuvre detection algorithms
Expanding or improving the functionalities of the manoeuvres monitoring tool, including:
Implementing new methods and manoeuvre detection thresholds,
Improving database capabilities for storing results,
Interfacing with other orbital tools,
Enhancing plotting and notification
Presenting and sharing the results within the wider Engineering team
The applicant by the end of the project will gain:
Software development skills: Python, SQL, Git (version control)
Improved understanding of orbital mechanics and orbit propagation
Research skills: analysis and problem solving, knowledge synthesis, collaboration
Ability to present results and communicate effectively with technical stakeholders
Exposure to the UK regulatory framework for orbital operators
Should time allow we would also like the SPINtern to have the opportunity to work collaboratively on a STEM project and attend monthly engineering workshops in-person or virtually.
