Job Description

Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as a Finds Supervisor.

This role is based at Fort Cumberland, Portsmouth and may be required to work on excavation sites.

What you will be doing

This is an opportunity to join the Archaeological Excavation team in the role of Finds Supervisor on a fixed term contract, supporting post-excavation work on several projects and potentially supporting fieldwork on one or more live excavation projects.

As our Finds Supervisor you will be responsible for finds during and following excavation: processing, recording (including data input), correct storage and the safety and security of finds and their records, including checking the paper and digital data for its accuracy and compliance with defined recording systems.

You will undertake post-excavation tasks to facilitate finds research, publication and eventual archiving: preparing assemblages for research, liaising with internal and external specialists to provide access to finds, managing data derived from research, assisting with the production of publications and preparing assemblages for handover to Archaeological Archives team.

You will also contribute to artefactual recording, processing and investigation on live fieldwork projects undertaken by the Archaeological Excavation team during the contract period, working under the guidance of the Excavation Co-directors and Project Finds Officer, in an efficient, systematic and safe manner.

Who we are looking for

  • A good degree in Archaeology or a related subject, or demonstrable equivalent experience.

  • Proven experience of finds recovery, processing, recording and investigation.

  • Experience of using digital systems to collect, check and manipulate archaeological data.

  • Highly organised, efficient and methodical approach to work, with close attention to detail.

  • A commitment to maintaining and improving personal academic and practitioner skills through self-assessment, training and reflective practice.

  • Excellent written and verbal communicator, able to liaise with a wide range of colleagues in a timely, relevant and constructive manner.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working and compressed hours working. Due to the short length of contract, we welcome candidates applying for this post as a secondment from their current employer via unpaid leave, subject to written confirmation from their employer following a contract offer from HE. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.
