Job Description
Summary
The Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service Team (GLAAS) supports the management of change by providing information and planning advice relating to the historic environment of London. The team maintains and develops the London Historic Environment Record in line with national standards and benchmarks, and provides advice to owners and others on the sustainable management of the historic environment. We are seeking an Assistant Archaeological Adviser GLAAS) to join the team on a 3 year fixed term contract.
What you will be doing
As part of this team the Assistant Archaeological Advisor will take delegated responsibility for the delivery of advice on proposals for change to places of archaeological interest. Applying the ethos of ‘constructive conservation’ and making effective use of HE’s Conservation Principles in all their advisory work, they will provide advice to owners and others on the sustainable management of the historic environment.
They will contribute to the promotion of and accessibility to the London HER to develop understanding and promote good stewardship. They will contribute to positive place-making and communities through their advisory work.
Main duties and responsibilities:
To support the GLAAS Archaeology Advisors providing planning advice in relation to places of archaeological interest, including assessing proposals, deciding upon GLAAS’ advice in consultation with the relevant Advisor, and delivering that advice to agreed timescales and to excellent customer service standards.
To help ensure the integration of GLAAS’ advice with other historic environment interests by building effective working relationships with historic environment specialists and professionals who interact with the HER, especially those in the London Development Advice Teams and those representing the London Boroughs.
To contribute to the development and maintenance of the London HER by supporting individual projects as required by the Team Leader and ensuring the deposition of appropriate data into the record.
To assist local planning authorities and others with the interpretation of the law and national planning policy with regard to places of archaeological interest.
Where appropriate, to provide archaeological briefs and monitor fieldwork on behalf of the relevant local planning authority, recommending the discharge of conditions or reporting noncompliance.
To support GLAAS to engage pro-actively with communities to share information and promote the value of the historic environment, with the aim of improving quality of place and social wellbeing.
To support the delivery of strategic priority activities and projects as agreed with line management.
To be an effective advocate for the benefits that conserving heritage assets can bring to communities.
To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and competencies required of the post requested by line management.
Please note that the role requires regular travel to sites (usually accessible by public transport).
The role may require visiting/inspecting sites which is likely to require climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined space (e.g. Church roofs, archaeological excavations etc.), however reasonable adjustments can be discussed.
The role will require occasional attendance at community meetings which are usually held at evenings or weekends.
What we are looking for
Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject.
Substantial experience of managing change to sites of archaeological interest through the planning system.
Expertise in the management of urban archaeology.
Confident negotiating and influencing skills
A methodical and analytical approach to understanding proposals for change and assessing their impact
Effective oral and written communication skills.
