Job Description

About Us

Driven by a passion to solve the climate crisis, The Sunrise Project U.S. is a team of experienced change-makers with a mission to scale social movements to drive the global transition beyond fossil fuels. With affiliated programs and staff in Australia and Europe, we have developed a unique model of grant making and campaigning that supports networks of organizations to drive powerful change towards our mission.

We have a dynamic and nimble organisational culture. We’re serious about supporting our people to thrive as we tackle the urgent climate challenge.

We believe that a diversity of experiences and perspectives will help us build stronger strategies, teams and movements. We take the broadest possible view of diversity and encourage First Nations people, people of color, people living outside of cities, people living with disabilities, neurodiverse, and LGBTQIA+ people to apply. We are continually working on becoming a better workplace for everyone. You can find out more here

About the Role

Working with the Sunrise Project’s campaign leads and network partners, the Campaigner will develop and implement campaigns aimed at key private equity firms and pension funds. The campaign’s goal is to get private equity to stop being the buyer of last resort for stranded assets from which other firms are divesting.  Campaign techniques may span research, public mobilization, digital campaigning, corporate engagement, and more. We’re looking for an experienced campaigner to help support and grow our existing work, while contributing new ideas on strategy, tactics, and potential partners.

About You

You’re passionate about solving the climate crisis and winning campaigns. You’re a skilled campaigner and creative thinker with a strong track record of making change happen. You have strong strategic instincts and want to shift the role of corporate power in our society. You have a demonstrated ability to manage projects and partnerships to make change happen and deliver real-world results. You understand corporate campaigning and are passionate about shifting the role of financial markets to stop driving climate change.

You can work independently and juggle multiple concurrent projects, and work collaboratively in teams, centering equity and justice in your approach to guiding others and to campaigning more generally. You’ve got exceptional networking and interpersonal communication skills and are just as comfortable working with senior finance industry professionals as with grassroots climate activists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-develop and implement campaign strategies and tactics to drive private equity firms to act on climate and to bring together the diverse set of actors currently fighting private equity to support one another and integrate climate into their demand sets

  • Convene, enable, coordinate, and support coalition members to implement campaign strategy

  • Design and implement campaign actions and events

  • Develop and execute grants to partner groups capable of executing agreed-upon strategies

  • Identify and connect with potential new allies; build relationships with grassroots groups that expand our private equity campaigning network; and deepen existing relationships with a network of activists

  • Develop and deliver trainings, actions, and other pressure tactics (both online and covid-safe in person) to push pensions and private equity firms to take bold action on climate

  • Work with Senior Communications Strategist to translate finance material for movement audiences and design and create activist toolkits and other assets to be used by movement partners and grassroots groups to execute actions at key targets

  • Connect with other Sunrise Project finance campaigns to align on big grassroots mobilization moments throughout the year

  • Align your work and strategies with campaign OKRs and Sunrise Values

Required skills, knowledge & experience:

  • Advanced English verbal and written communication skills and the ability to engage people across geographies, experiences, and backgrounds.

  • Ability to quickly process information that can be translated into campaign tactics

  • High level of initiative and the ability to solve problems

  • Proven ability to work well in small teams in a remote and fast-paced environment

  • Creative thinking, experience in implementation of design thinking and story-telling components in campaigns, and openness to use to cutting-edge tactics

  • A passion for taking action on climate change and a deep commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Desirable skills, knowledge & experience:

  • Experience working with unions, labor movements, or pension funds

  • Experience with corporate or finance campaigns, including with direct engagement or negotiations

  • Experience working on international projects across multiple time zones, countries, and cultures

  • Experience as a spokesperson or working with the media

  • Experience working with communities first and most impacted by the climate crisis

  • Working knowledge of how the financial sector in general and private equity in particular operates and/or a curiosity to learn more about financial systems

  • An understanding of how the private equity LBO model enhances climate change risks and how the power of investors and communities can be leveraged to phase out fossil fuels, and a willingness and ability to learn more

  • Spanish proficiency or fluency

  • Experience creating and implementing digital campaign strategies
