Job Description

Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Senior Architectural Investigator.

What you will be doing

As our Senior Architectural Investigator, you will provide authoritative professional and specialist advice in the investigation, research and assessment of buildings and the historic built environment. You will undertake, manage and contribute to projects on historic buildings, sites and places in support of Historic England’s Corporate Plan and National Research Strategy. You will also help maintain and expand expertise through delivering training, producing guidance and advice, managing commissioned work, assisting with placements, and sustaining Historic England’s status and reputation as an expert organisation.

Please note the role:

  • requires regular travel to sites, libraries and archives which may be difficult to access by public transport

  • may involve occasional overnight stays and some evening and weekend working may also be necessary

  • involves cross-regional and national projects and therefore travel outside the Historic England region in which the post is based

  • may involve working at height and on construction sites for some site visits.

Who we are looking for

  • High-standard academic or professional qualification in architectural history, buildings archaeology or a related subject. Alternatively, equivalent experience gained through on the job training or practical experience;

  • An understanding of different approaches to investigating historic places and areas, such as historic area assessment

  • In depth knowledge and experience of investigating, analysing and interpreting the historic fabric of buildings. Experience of measured survey and photographic recording

  • Experience of successful project management and delivery in the historic built environment field

  • Research skills of the highest standard; confidence using primary and secondary sources, both online and in person (libraries, archives, etc);

  • Broad knowledge of British architectural history and general history, with a specialism in one or more subject areas.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.

We are an inclusive employer and believe that flexible working options are for everyone. We want to make sure our working arrangements don’t prevent anyone from joining us because of their personal circumstances. We also want to provide you with the best balance in your home and work life that we can.

We are open to considering options including job sharing, part-time working, compressed hours working and different working locations, including hybrid working. Please visit our jobs pages or contact us to find out more.
