Job Description

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical Advisor Midwifery to join the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) to support the development of a National training programme for Intrapartum Fetal Deterioration as part of the Avoiding Brain Injury in Childbirth (ABC) Programme.

Job Title: Senior Clinical Advisor Midwifery

Salary: Secondment

Contract: Fixed term until January 2025, Part time, 2 days per week (A secondment arrangement with the current employer and/or part-time working arrangements are very welcome. We will be flexible in ensuring an appropriate start date around organisational release.)

Location: London/Hybrid

About the Project:

In 2015, the Secretary of State for Health set a target of halving the 2010 rates of stillbirths, neonatal deaths, maternal deaths and brain injuries in babies that occur during or soon after birth by 2030. In 2017, this target was brought forward to 2025. For intrapartum brain injuries, this ambition translates into a reduction in rates from 4.3 per 1,000 live births in 2010 to 3.5 in 2020 and 2.2 in 2025. Figures show that progress towards this target has been slower than desired: in 2019, the brain injury rate was 4.2 per 1,000 live births.

As a result of these concerns, £9.4m was awarded in the 2020 Spending Review to improve maternity safety, including a national brain injury reduction programme that aims to reduce the incidence of intrapartum brain injury by improving the quality and safety of maternity services across the country.

The ABC collaborative (RCM, THIS Institute & RCOG) have worked together to co-design a suite of tools to support intrapartum fetal monitoring and the management of Impacted fetal head at CS, two common causes of hypoxic brain injury during childbirth.

This phase of the programme is working to scope and pilot the interventions in practice to determine an effective roll out across all of England, in association with partners in NHS England.

About the role:

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Clinical Advisor in Midwifery to support the piloting and development of a national implementation plan for the ABC programme.  The successful candidate will work jointly with a senior Obstetric Clinical Advisor role.  The roles will ensure the multi-professional clinical input and act on behalf of the programme director for ABC.

The Senior Clinical Advisor (midwifery) will have an in-depth clinical knowledge of intrapartum care, have an understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, direct experience of research, writing and publications as well as leading the implementation and facilitation of multi-professional training, ideally at scale. Experience of NHS systems and structures is also desirable.

The midwifery role will focus on the Fetal Monitoring stream and will lead this component of the programme supported by a Clinical Fellow.

The successful candidate will represent the ABC collaboration at regional and national meetings, and contribute to the writing and dissemination of project reports.

Requirements:

As the ideal candidate you will have:

  • Registered Midwife holding current registration with the NMC

  • Relevant clinical Experience

  • Educated to Masters level, or equivalent in a relevant subject

  • Experience of qualitative data analysis and collection

  • Experience of implementation of multi-professional intrapartum fetal monitoring and/or obstetric emergency training at scale

  • Extensive knowledge of research in the NHS and/ or complex health organisations

  • Excellent writing skills including the ability to contribute to reports and academic papers
