Job Description

Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Dating Coordinator to join our team at Historic England to support our senior specialists in delivering major projects.

Your primary role will be to develop the Historic England Radiocarbon Database, facilitating public access via the ProjectC14 portal at the Archaeological Data Service. This will include populating Historic England data commissioned since 2015, training and mentoring external contributors, and validating data from England for deposition.

There will also be the opportunity to develop your skills in Bayesian chronological modelling, both by leading on casework in support of colleagues in other parts of Historic England and by supporting specialist modellers in delivering more complex and long-term projects.

What you will be doing

1.    Collate information on 14C measurements funded by Historic England (HE) since April 2015 and input into the HE Radiocarbon database.

2.    Manage HE Radiocarbon database (e.g. look-up tables, export of batches to ProjectC14).

3.    Train and mentor external contributors in the correct use of the database, and in the necessary technical aspects of radiocarbon dating (including oversight of collation of 14C measurements from England in the CBA Index to Radiocarbon Dates from Great Britain and Ireland

4.    Provide scientific dating in support of casework priorities across HE (e.g. designation, repair grants).

5.    Assist in the provision of scientific dating for other corporate priorities.

6. Undertake other duties as required in support of the efficient and effective running of the scientific dating team.

What we are looking for

  • Experience of the application of scientific dating to archaeological sites and/or historic buildings

  • Good archaeological understanding

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Good organisational skills including attention to detail

  • Able to take personal responsibility for their own work and see things through
