Job Description
Summary
We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.
We are seeking a Senior Software Developer to join the team. This is an Internal Applicant only opportunity. Details on how to apply are below.
You will be responsible for the development and support of custom software applications within Historic England, which includes our internal business systems and public facing web applications.
What you will be doing
As a senior developer you will act as technical lead, establish development standards and be responsible for code quality and selecting the right approach. You will be a proactive driver of improvement within the development team.
You will support the professional development of more junior developers, providing mentoring and coaching
The Senior Software Developer will develop and support Historic England applications. Key objectives include:
1. Be responsible for architectural design and development of new systems to internal and external customers
2. Selecting the right approach for system design to favour simplicity, security, resilience, and to meet our digital strategy goals.
3. Establish and improve development standards within the developer team, supporting adoption by junior team members.
4. Take the lead maintaining the efficient functioning of existing systems and identify requirements for compliance and planning future upgrades.
5. Estimate effort for complex work on systems, understanding relative complexity across the team, as part of the planning process.
6. Take responsibility for the delivery of high quality, efficient, reliable code, including peer reviewing the work of other developers, and mentoring junior team members when needed.
7. Proactively advocate a culture of continuous improvement, promoting best practice and optimising team processes.
8. Work collaboratively within an Agile team to apply your expert technical skills to deliver the business’s strategy and users’ needs
9. Ensure that the developer team is adopting the right tools and technology so that Historic England is remaining current and tracking future trends.
10. Actively seeking opportunities to represent Historic England on developer forums and contributing to discussions in the wider community as a technical expert.
11. Keep focused on the 4 agile principles: Value individuals and interactions over processes and tools, value working software over comprehensive documentation, value customer collaboration over contract negotiation and value responding to change over following a plan.
12. Make sure our legal obligations and policy expectations are met, including health & safety, equality & diversity, finance, procurement, information security and managing people.
What we are looking for
Proven working experience in a similar software development role.
Considerable experience architecting, developing, and maintaining secure enterprise web applications.
Experience of acting as a technical lead in a multidiscipline development team.Ability to work well in a team and proactively drive improvement
Ability to work to tight deadlines
Keen attention to detail
Conscientious, motivated and customer focussed
