Job Description

Summary

We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.

Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to become a Listing Advisor. This is an Internal vacancy.

To provide specialist aid to the Listing Team Leader in the delivery of a Listing service in the London and South East of England Region and contribute to the delivery of a designation service to corporate, regional and strategic priorities.

This role is covering the London and South East Region.

The role is hybrid working from our London office. Homeworking arrangements can be considered.

What you will be doing

  • To assess candidates for inclusion on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) across the full spectrum of the historic environment.

  • To provide accurate and timely specialist advice to negotiated standards, formats and deadlines, including for Enhanced Advisory Services cases.

  • To work with equal ease on casework and strategic projects, responding to Historic England regional and corporate priorities.

  • To undertake consultation procedures with key stakeholders including local authorities, amenity societies, owners and applicants.

  • To undertake a necessary level of information gathering and research to deliver robust, well-expressed assessment and recommendations to the Team Leader

  • To recognise and flag contentious or controversial cases as early as possible, ensuring risks are identified and mitigated and external interests and perceptions considered.

  • To build on expertise in particular areas of specialist knowledge, and to use, share and disseminate this knowledge as appropriate within and outside Historic England.

  • To mentor and undertake line management responsibilities for Assistant Advisers and apprentices where required.

  • To work with other regional and central teams to ensure the alignment of Listing activity with negotiated priorities and underpinning research as appropriate.

  • To work with partners and stakeholders to deliver strategic and thematic Listing programmes. 

  • To promote our Enhanced Advisory Services and contribute to EAS casework.

  • To manage strategic projects in accordance with group procedures as agreed with the Team Leader.

  • To be a champion of the principles of Listing and current Listing policy and communicate them through various media including TV and radio where required.  

  • To build relationships with external stakeholders and attend and contribute to Conservation Officer fora as negotiated with the Team Leader.

  • To aid the Listing Team Leader through duty cover and other agreed mechanisms.

  • To represent Listing on internal programme boards and networks as agreed with the Team Leader.

    What we are looking for

    Experience

  • Experience of working in the historic environment sector, and, preferably, experience of the legislative regimes for protecting the historic environment.

  • Experience of, and expertise in, specialist assessment of the built historic environment, and the links between specialisms.

  • Experience of project management and of building and maintaining partnerships in project work. 

    Skills, abilities and knowledge

  • An ability to recognise, analyse and assess the significance of components of the built historic environment, including engagement with linked specialisms.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

  • Dedication to Historic England corporate priorities for protecting the historic environment.

  • Ability to build and sustain effective, mutually respectful working relationships with colleagues and external partners.

  • A commitment to champion the interest of the built and historic environment to the public at large via various media including the press and social media.

  • An affinity with computers, computer management systems and databases.

  • Ability to meet deadlines consistently.

  • Commitment to a work/life balance.

    Qualifications

  • Good degree in a relevant subject (or substantial equivalent experience).

  • Knowledge of a specialist area of archaeological or architectural history or of an aspect of assessing significance in the built historic environment.

  • Membership of a relevant professional body or organisation is an advantage.

  • A clean, full driving license is essential.
