Job Description

Summary

Historic England are seeking a Senior Building Services Engineer (Mechanical) to join our Technical Conservation Team to support the team’s role as a centre of specialist knowledge in building services engineering and low and zero carbon technologies in respect of the historic environment. You will take an active role in promoting the specific sympathetic approaches required when applying building services engineering solutions to all aspects of the historic environment and this will include identifying and testing new and existing approaches in respect to building services engineering.

The Technical Conservation Team in the National Specialist Services Department specialises in the care, repair and conservation of buildings, structures and landscapes. We set standards and provide specialist technical services and strategic leadership on the technical aspects of the care, repair, maintenance and adaptation of the historic built environment.  We do this by developing and promoting evidence-based guidance and best practice to support those who care for and make decisions about the stewardship of the historic environment.

This is a full-time post where you will be working 36 hours a week.

The location for this role is National, we offer hybrid working where you will be based in one of the following offices and from home - Newcastle, York, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Bristol, Portsmouth and Cambridge.

What you will be doing

You will help protect and maintain our rich built heritage by providing high quality expert technical advice on building services engineering within the historic built environment covering a wide range of both listed and non-listed buildings.

This will require acting as the intelligent client function for building services engineering on grant-aided projects, casework advice, external commissions and tenders. Provide building services engineering advice on properties managed by Historic England, including where appropriate, acting as the project engineer on schemes, identifying and assessing problems, determining the need for repairs, recommending action, providing or procuring fully worked up engineering schemes and supervising the implementation of the work. 

You will play an active role in advising on how the energy performance of historic buildings can be improved, focussing on how existing systems can be replaced with low and zero carbon technologies.

What we are looking for

  • Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers or Institution of Mechanical Engineers with substantial relevant practical experience.

  • Experience in the management of mechanical building services engineering design and implementation of design solutions.

  • Experience in assessment and implementation of energy management solutions and good practice.

  • Ability to take engineering problems back to fundamentals; apply basic engineering principles; identify and develop solutions.

  • Good IT skills

  • Team player with good written and oral communication skills

This role includes the requirement to travel to sites, many of which are in remote locations and may not be served by public transport. It is essential you have a full UK driving license.

Due to the nature of the role and required attendance at sites and offices, there may be occasions which would necessitate further travel or overnight stays.

The role will also involve work that is at times in exposed and/or difficult terrain such as construction sites.  The ability to climb scaffolding is essential.
