Job Description

About The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) and the Clean Transportation Internship

Have you heard about TAF? We’re a regional climate agency that invests in low-carbon solutions for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and helps scale them up for broad implementation. We are experienced leaders and collaborate with stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors who have ideas and opportunities for reducing carbon emissions. We advance the most promising concepts by investing, providing grants, influencing policies and running programs.

Join TAF’s Clean Transportation team to support research and analysis that will help reduce transportation related emissions across the GTHA. As a Junior Analyst, you’ll help develop clear, compelling materials that support regional transportation reforms aimed at reducing vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) across the GTHA and gain exposure to cross-sector collaboration and learn how research feeds into policy and advocacy

What you’ll work on:

Reducing the growth of vehicle kilometres travelled (VKT) is one of TAF’s core transportation priorities. High levels of VKT contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, congestion, and negative health outcomes in the GTHA. This internship will support research, analysis, and strategy development to help advance solutions that reduce VKT and promote cleaner, more efficient transportation systems.

Your work will explore policies and strategies such as:

  • Mode shift to transit, walking, and cycling

  • Planning and land use reforms, including parking policy, zoning, and development patterns

  • More efficient goods movement and freight, including e‑commerce and last‑mile delivery

TAF is preparing to launch a campaign focused on one or more of these themes, in collaboration with policymakers, advocates, academics, industry stakeholders, and coalition partners. As the campaign develops, the intern will contribute meaningful research, communications support, and strategic inputs. Examples of deliverables include policy briefs, slide decks highlighting best practices from other cities, or background research to support public‑facing materials.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct background research and technical analysis to inform TAF’s campaign approach on reducing VKT in the GTHA

  • Prepare short technical notes, issue briefs, and policy summaries for internal use and for external partners

  • Synthesize academic research, jurisdictional examples, and policy proposals into accessible materials

  • Work with staff across multiple teams (including Research & Innovation, Policy, and Communications) and with external consultants

  • Support the development of public‑facing campaign materials and help plan a stakeholder forum or convening

Other Clean Transportation Projects

Alongside the core VKT work, the intern may support other Clean Transportation initiatives, such as:

  • Public and private EV charging deployment

  • EV-ready infrastructure in multi‑unit residential buildings

  • Related research, stakeholder engagement, or communications tasks

Key details:

Compensation: $28/hour, plus financial support for wifi associated with work. A laptop will be provided.

Employment term:  full time (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) for approximately four months between May 4 – August 28. Flexible schedule and hours to be determined in consultation with your manager.

Location: Hybrid, with two days a week in TAF’s Toronto office (at Union Station). Some travel within the GTHA will be required (no vehicle required).

Perks:

  • Experience what it’s like to work in the climate sector, with a team of climate action professionals.

  • Enjoy socials, lunch & learns, training sessions and other staff-wide experiences.

  • Benefit from other hands-on learning and networking opportunities.

The kind of skills and experience we're looking for:

  • Currently completing, or recently graduated from, an undergraduate or master’s program in a relevant field (e.g. engineering, urban or transportation planning, geography, public policy, environmental studies or a related discipline).

  • Strong written communication skills; ability to explain complex ideas clearly.

  • Research, analysis, and synthesis skills.

  • Comfort with basic quantitative analysis (e.g. Microsoft Excel).

  • Interest in transportation, climate policy, and regional planning in the GTHA.

  • Ability to collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Applying to intern at TAF:

We know that strong candidates bring a range of experiences that may not line up perfectly with every requirement. If this role excites you and you believe you’d be a great fit, we encourage you to apply.

Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply.

Our application process uses two short, job‑related questions in an anonymized platform so we can focus on your skills and approach. If you need accommodations, email jobs@taf.ca.

Please do not use AI to generate your responses. Our team reads every submission, and AI‑written answers tend to blend together, making it harder to get a sense of you. Using your own words gives you the fairest shot, and it also makes our reviewers (your potential future colleagues!) much happier.

We review anonymized responses first, then we look at résumés. Top candidates will be invited to interviews and a brief assessment. Everyone will hear back once the process concludes.

We will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting March 26 and may close the posting early if we have enough qualified candidates, so we encourage applicants to apply early
