Job Description

Job Description:

GVL works with large, complex Earth observation datasets and requires effective data visualization solutions. The project focuses on developing online mapping applications and interactive metrics dashboards using tools like Power BI and other platforms to present insights clearly and support data-driven decision-making.

Project activities will focus on the development of interactive metrics dashboards to visualise insights from large and complex Earth observation datasets. Key activities include:

  • Data Preparation and Integration: Cleaning, transforming, and combining geospatial and non-spatial datasets to create structured, analysis-ready data sources suitable for dashboard development.

  • Dashboard Design and Development: Creating intuitive, visually engaging dashboards using tools such as Power BI. These dashboards will present key metrics, trends, and summaries to support analysis and decision-making across various environmental and operational contexts.

  • Custom Visualisation and Interactivity: Implementing interactive features such as filters, drill-downs, dynamic charts, and time-based visualisations to enhance user engagement and provide tailored insights.

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Requirements Gathering: Collaborating with end-users to understand their needs, define key performance indicators, and ensure the dashboards deliver relevant, actionable information.

  • Testing and Optimisation: Conducting usability testing and performance checks to ensure dashboards are responsive, accurate, and capable of handling large volumes of data efficiently.

  • Documentation and User Support: Developing user guides, technical documentation, and providing training sessions or materials to ensure effective use and long-term maintainability of the dashboards.

These activities aim to turn complex datasets into accessible, decision-support tools that empower users with clear, actionable insights.

The successful applicant should have the following qualities and abilities:

Academic Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in a relevant field such as Data Science, Environmental Science, GIS, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of data analysis and visualisation concepts.

  • Familiarity with Power BI, Excel, or similar dashboarding tools.

  • An understanding of data preparation processes (e.g., cleaning, transforming, and joining datasets).

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Interest in environmental data and its applications.

    Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with tools such as Power Query, SQL, or Python for data manipulation.

  • Familiarity with geospatial data and visualisation.

  • Understanding of DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) within Power BI.

  • Experience in user-centred design or engaging with stakeholders to gather requirements.

  • Previous coursework or projects involving interactive dashboards or large datasets.

This internship offers the opportunity to work on real-world environmental datasets, develop high-impact visualisation tools, and gain experience with industry-standard platforms. The intern will build both technical and professional skills in a supportive, collaborative environment while contributing to meaningful, data-driven outcomes.

Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
