Job Description

About The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) and the Research & Innovation Internship

Have you heard about TAF? We’re a regional climate agency that invests in low-carbon solutions for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and helps scale them up for broad implementation. We are experienced leaders and collaborate with stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors who have ideas and opportunities for reducing carbon emissions. We advance the most promising concepts by investing, providing grants, influencing policies and running programs.

Join TAF’s Research & Innovation team to help explore practical, data-driven solutions for reducing emissions in the GTHA. As a Junior Analyst, you’ll support research and analysis that strengthens TAF’s programs and helps assess emerging low carbon technologies and ideas. Your work will contribute directly to projects that advance local climate action.

What you’ll work on:

GTHA Emissions Inventory & Data Updates

  • Research municipal low‑carbon success stories.

  • Update fossil fuel emission factors using the 2024 National Inventory Report.

  • Acquire and analyse the GTHA’s active transportation data using the 2024 Google’s Environmental Insights Explorer dataset.

  • Review available methods and datasets for estimating aviation emissions and update figures accordingly.

  • Scan major industrial decarbonization initiatives that took place in 2025.

  • Create a list of the gas‑fired power plants in Ontario and summarize publicly reported emissions data.

Quantification Support

  • Gather and validate data used to support investment due diligence and grant applications.

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of carbon‑impact quantification models.

  • Participate in team discussions about quantification work and help track action items and data needs.

Applied Research

  • Research environmental risks and mitigation strategies related to the full lifecycle of solar energy systems and energy storage‑ systems to support  the development of a topic explainer.

  • Track and summarize emerging datasets relevant to climate planning in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Region.

Employment term:  full time (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) for approximately four months between May 4 – August 28. Flexible schedule and hours to be determined in consultation with your manager.

Location: Hybrid, with two days a week in TAF’s Toronto office (at Union Station). Some travel within the GTHA will be required (no vehicle required).

Perks:

Applying to intern at TAF:

We know that strong candidates bring a range of experiences that may not line up perfectly with every requirement. If this role excites you and you believe you’d be a great fit, we encourage you to apply.

Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply.

Our application process uses two short, job‑related questions in an anonymized platform so we can focus on your skills and approach. If you need accommodations, email jobs@taf.ca.

Please do not use AI to generate your responses. Our team reads every submission, and AI‑written answers tend to blend together, making it harder to get a sense of you. Using your own words gives you the fairest shot, and it also makes our reviewers (your potential future colleagues!) much happier.

We review anonymized responses first, then we look at résumés. Top candidates will be invited to interviews and a brief assessment. Everyone will hear back once the process concludes.

We will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting March 26 and may close the posting early if we have enough qualified candidates, so we encourage applicants to apply early
