Job Description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the Association of British Insurers is the people.  We’re hugely proud that 98% of our people think individual differences are respected and we are empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment. If that sounds like your sort of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

Would you like to work to advocate for something that makes a positive difference to people's lives?

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Head of Health and Protection, the successful candidate will help develop ABI policy to improve the health of UK citizens. Health and protection insurance support people back into the workplace after illness, provide a safety net for when they can’t work, support people in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking pressure off the NHS, and ensure families have financial support after the loss of a loved one.

The impending general election and the government’s focus on improving the health of the working-age population in the face of record long-term sickness levels make this an exciting opportunity, as the ABI seeks to build a partnership with government to create a healthier society through increasing the use of insurance-funded health and prevention services.

This role involves leading and contributing to projects with ABI colleagues, government, our members in the insurance industry and other stakeholders. Key workstreams for the team include developing policy on workplace health, health data sharing, and the interaction between medical progress and insurance, as well as building the evidence base to back up our policy recommendations.

Please note this is a full-time role but we are open to applications from those who wish to work on a flexible and/or job share basis. Please let us know if this would be your preference. We work in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

The role will be offered as a fixed-term contract for one year.

What's the job?

  • Deliver several key outcomes in the ABI Business Plan relating to health and protection insurance.

  • Work effectively with colleagues in the health and protection team, and colleagues across policy, data & analytics, regulation, and corporate affairs, to create political and media support for the important role health and protection insurance plays in supporting the health of UK citizens. Develop effective policy to drive greater use of these products.

  • Engage with ABI members, stakeholders and government officials in the development of policy, using data, research and analytical skills to develop credible and evidence-based solutions.

  • Present at ABI committees, workshops, and events, to explore problems, develop solutions and build consensus.

  • Build a strong industry network and effective and trusted relationships with senior staff in member firms and wider stakeholders.

  • Develop a strong understanding of members’ commercial environment, health and protection insurance products, and the impact of regulation and legislation.

  • Act as a compelling external representative of the ABI and advocate for the health and protection insurance industry by undertaking speaking engagements and media appearances.

  • Work closely with conduct regulation colleagues to provide policy input to FCA Thematic Reviews and Market Studies that impact health and protection insurance. Collaborate with tax colleagues on protection and health related tax issues to ensure optimal outcomes for the health and protection insurance market.

  • Organise, run and present at events for members and stakeholders.

What skills you'll need

You’ll be comfortable handling multiple priorities and facilitating meetings with your various stakeholders to arrive at desired outcomes.

A confident, persuasive and friendly communication style will stand you in good stead, both with your stakeholders and colleagues, to help you navigate policy issues and build consensus on a way forward.

Alongside this, you’ll also need excellent project management and analysis skills to be able to digest complex information quickly and make it engaging and accessible for others. You don’t need to have worked in insurance previously to apply.

Minimum requirements:

  • Excellent analytical skills and an evidence-based approach to policy making, decision making, and problem solving. Sound judgment.

  • Intellectual curiosity, with proven experience of leading and analysing complex public policy issues, identifying policy risks and finding solutions.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to develop clear and concise messages for a range of stakeholders.

  • Attention to detail and the capability to understand and influence technical regulatory issues and industry developments.

  • Excellent lobbying and relationship-management skills, including the ability to influence and persuade senior people in member firms, Government, regulators and elsewhere.

  • A self-starter with a proactive approach and the ability to plan and work independently to deliver agreed objectives.

  • Ability to manage several complex work areas simultaneously and independently across a wide-ranging portfolio. Ability to prioritise effectively, respond to time critical requests, and adapt to changing work demands.

  • Good team working, leadership and interpersonal skills and a commitment to working proactively with colleagues and members to get results.

  • Effective presentation skills and confidence to present to a variety of audiences and media.

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the insurance industry and / or membership organisations is desirable, but not essential.
