Job Description

Job Description:

The Clean Energy and Infrastructure Toolkit is a catalytic platform being developed within the RE mission. The platform aims to showcase geospatial and satellite-enabled capabilities across the built environment, supporting engagement with businesses and partners while translating space data into practical applications.

This internship will focus on early development of the Data Catalogue component by helping design and build simple demonstration applications and infrastructure case studies. The intern will begin populating the platform with example datasets and use cases, and may engage with pre-identified space sector companies to support initial content development.

The intern will:

  • Support early development of the Clean Energy and Infrastructure Toolkit within the Satellite Applications Catapult catalytic mission work.

  • Design and begin construction of the Data Catalogue component of the platform. The intern will help identify suitable themes, collate example datasets, and develop simple demonstration applications showcasing geospatial and satellite-enabled solutions for infrastructure and clean energy use cases.

  • Working with pre-identified space sector companies, the applicant may assist in gathering datasets and developing short case-study-style applications that illustrate real-world use of the technology. The work is intended to produce clear, visually accessible demonstrations that can be used in business development discussions and stakeholder engagement, supporting the broader goal of translating space data capabilities into practical tools for industry and partners.

The successful applicant should have the following qualities and abilities:

Technical skills:

The applicant will

  • Develop technical skills in geospatial data presentation, including working with spatial datasets, identifying appropriate data sources, and beginning the construction of simple web or application-style demonstrations for the Data Catalogue.

  • Gain experience in translating satellite and environmental data into accessible visual outputs, including creating case-study-style applications that showcase infrastructure and clean energy use cases relevant to the mission work of the Satellite Applications Catapult. Exposure to platform development concepts, basic data structuring, and geospatial storytelling will also be supported.

Human and professional skills

  • stakeholder communication, particularly when engaging with space-sector businesses to support early content development and case study identification.

  • learn how to explain technical capabilities in clear, non-technical language suitable for business development and mission presentations.

The placement will also help develop problem-solving and independent working skills as the intern contributes to shaping themes, identifying suitable datasets, and testing simple application ideas. Collaboration across technical and service design teams will improve interdisciplinary working experience, while project organisation and time management skills will be strengthened through phased development of platform components. Overall, the internship aims to build both applied geospatial technical ability and the communication skills needed to be successful in this field.

Academic Requirements:

  • Applicants should be university students studying geography, environmental science, computer science, data science, or a related discipline.

  • Basic knowledge of GIS, spatial data analysis, or data visualisation is required.

  • Strong analytical thinking and an interest in geospatial technology and sustainability are essential.

Desirable requirements:

  • Experience with web or application-style data presentation, familiarity with Python, R, or GIS software, and interest in clean energy or infrastructure analytics.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently while supporting catalytic mission work within the Satellite Applications Catapult are advantageous.

Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
