Job Description

Project Description

Multi-layered Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems are essential for the UK, supporting the resilience of national critical infrastructure and contributing to economic stability. The UK economy relies significantly on PNT across various sectors, including finance, telecommunications, and transport, and faces risks associated with disruptions to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). A multi-layered PNT approach improves resilience by integrating different technologies, thus ensuring continuous and accurate PNT services. This is important for the effective operation of autonomous vehicles and future mobility solutions, which require precise and reliable PNT data to operate safely and efficiently. This project focuses on simulating a multi-layered system utilising GNSS, 5G, and other PNT sources while examining the performance of PNT services in urban canyons.

Over the 8 weeks, we hope you will develop your skills and understanding in:

  • Domain Knowledge: Autonomous Vehicles and Future Mobility

  • Understanding of the requirements and challenges of PNT services for autonomous vehicles.

  • Knowledge of the role of PNT in future mobility solutions.

  • Analytical Skills: Data Analysis and Performance Evaluation

  • Ability to analyse simulation results and evaluate system performance.

  • Skills in identifying and resolving issues to optimise system functionality.

  • Technical Skills: Simulation and Modelling

  • Experience in setting up and running complex simulations for PNT systems.

  • Proficiency in using simulation tools like MATLAB/Python/STK.

  • Navigation and Positioning Technologies

  • In-depth understanding of GNSS, inertial navigation systems, and alternative PNT sources.

  • Experience in implementing and testing these technologies.

The successful applicant will have the following skills:

  • Be pursuing a Engineering or Computer Science degree

  • Programming and Software Development

  • Navigation and Positioning Technologies

  • Simulation and Modelling

  • Analytical & Problem Solving

  • Data Analysis

  • Troubleshooting and Debugging

  • Training or certification in GNSS, PNT technologies, or autonomous vehicle systems.

    Process details:

  • 8 weeks minimum fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate

  • 5 days holiday to be taken during the placement
