Role Profile

The Chair leads our Board and is ultimately accountable for ensuring the Board has the strategy, culture, processes and people to deliver our purpose.

We are seeking an ambitious and driven individual to guide the implementation of our new strategy.

The successful candidate will be passionate about improving health equity and have demonstrable experience growing organisations that work at the interface of public, commercial, academic and community sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy – ensuring the organisation has an agreed strategy and values to deliver its purpose.

  • Executive management – appointing, supporting and appraising the performance of the Chief Executive Officer in the development, management and delivery of the organisation’s strategic aims and objectives.

  • Managing relationships – creating, maintaining and influencing relationships with the organisation’s key stakeholders, including regional partners, national commissioners and policy makers.

  • External engagement – representing and championing the organisation at meetings, events and in the media.

  • Board meetings – chairing effective Board meetings, liaising with the executive on agenda planning and ensuring business is covered efficiently and effectively.

  • Decision making – creating an environment for a high performing board, where challenge and scrutiny are welcomed and all Board members contribute their skills and experience to decision making.

  • Governance – ensuring the organisation has the appropriate procedures, processes and controls in place and they are followed. Managing potential conflicts of interest and ensuring probity is maintained.

  • Board development – creating a high-performing Board, managing Board performance and succession planning, ensuring the Board maintains the appropriate capabilities and diversity of perspectives to enable effective governance.

Experience we are looking for

  • Governance – well developed non-executive experience, ideally in the role of a Chair, with a track record of leading and developing effective governance. Understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of the Chair of a company limited by guarantee working at the interface of the public, private and community sectors.

  • Organisational development – track record of using their expertise to advise, counsel and guide the development and growth of organisations.

  • Leading change in complex systems – experienced using innovation to influence and drive  improvement in complex systems. Experience leading change in health and care environments and at the interface of commercial, academic and public systems is desirable.

  • Business management – experience in a broad range of business, financial and organisational management skills.

Key success factors

  • Board leadership – a clear understanding of the role of a Chair and how to lead an effective Board.

  • Strategic leadership – providing clarity of vision to the Board on the development and growth of the organisation in fast-moving environment with competing pressures.

  • Influencing – established and relevant networks with the ability to build meaningful strategic relationships for the organisation that influence key stakeholders at local, regional, national and international levels.
