Job Description

We need a passionate and persuasive environmentally conscious person to shape and deliver our Environmental Action Plan through thoughtful, engaging, responsive and effective projects and services, that ensure that Bankside becomes Central London's most sustainable neighbourhood.

Better Bankside is a Business Improvement District (BID) in Southwark, Central London. We exist to improve the experience of our neighbourhood for everyone. Better Bankside was one of the first Business Improvement Districts in the country, established in 2005.

Better Bankside's members are the 850+ companies in the BID area who pay its annual levy. Many of these are deeply involved in the governance of the company, and the delivery of our projects and services.

You will be leading on the delivery of the Better Bankside “Environment Action Plan, which sites under our Strategic Pillar of “Energising Climate Action” aiming to improve our local environment and reduce the carbon impact of Bankside businesses.

Job overview;

You will be the lead for sustainability initiatives for Better Bankside, developing and delivering key projects and services to address projects within our Environment Action Plan, working collaboratively with Better Bankside colleagues, businesses and stakeholders, to ensure that environmental sustainability runs through the core of everything we do.

The plan aims to promote cycling and active travel, pioneer the use of green logistics, reduce the waste produced by local businesses and workers, improve re-use and commercial recycling rates, develop and promote circular economy products made from locally-collected and recycled waste, and reduce the carbon of local business premises.

As our Sustainability Manager, you will be responsible for the delivery of a wide range of innovative and forward-thinking initiatives as part of Better Bankside’s Environmental Action Plan and strategic pillar  “Energising  Climate Action” (See diagram) These will include, but are not limited to, promoting sustainable travel, transport and mobility, the reduction of waste, energy efficiency of premises, local energy generation, carbon reduction, and supporting the work of Greener Spaces projects.

You will be joining a highly collaborative team who are passionate about assisting Bankside's business community in their journey to a net zero carbon future.

The role reports to the Director of Place and will work closely with the Bankside Urban Forest manager, who develops and implements improvements to Bankside’s Public Realm.

The role provides a fantastic opportunity to work across the organisation and with notable businesses and institutions such as Borough Market, the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe, to assist in their transition to a sustainable future.

About you;

·The post would be well suited to a passionate environmentally conscious person, who leads by example, and who wants to make a real local impact on a high-profile Central London neighbourhood, that features nationally renowned businesses and institutions,

A person who is comfortable in a position of authority, able to manage a diverse portfolio of projects, deputising for the Director of Place on occasion.

A strong communicator, with an ability to engage, listen to, and inform local stakeholders about complex environmental issues and develop strong partnerships with local businesses and national and regional partner organisations

Someone who has a broad base of knowledge about different environmental sustainability agendas and can translate this into effective action within the Bankside neighbourhood, through innovative, thoughtful and engaging projects and services

A creative and collaborative person who can help shape ideas, constructively challenge and inform a wide audience, working collaboratively with our member businesses, taking our staff team, local businesses and stakeholders with you.

A persuasive influencer who can drive behavioural change that will result in Bankside's businesses, workers, residents and visitors being more informed in making climate positive choices.

Working arrangements

Better Bankside operates on core hours of 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional additional hours, on evenings and weekends. Due to the nature of our work, a minimum of three days per week will be based in the office with up to two days working from home.
