About Wellcome’s Investments team
Wellcome is an independent foundation which supports science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone. We fund a wide array of grants and initiatives to support new discoveries in science and health, and to help find solutions for three of the world’s greatest health challenges: climate change and health, infectious diseases and mental health.
Our work is entirely funded by our £37.6 billion investment portfolio. Wellcome has generated strong, long-term returns from a wide range of financial assets around the world, including public equity, private equity, venture capital, property and hedge funds.
The portfolio is managed by our Investments team, led by our Co-CIOs Lisha Patel and Fabian Thehos. Over the last ten years, this team’s work has generated around £29bn for our mission.
What you’ll be doing
Joining the Wellcome Investments Team provides an opportunity to delve into investment analysis, engage in financial markets, develop your investment judgment, and understand how our long-term philosophy seeks to generate returns to support Wellcome’s mission.
Over the two-year programme, you will have the opportunity to contribute to new investment recommendations across a variety of asset classes, assist in ongoing diligence on existing assets in our portfolio and research investment ideas. You will also have the chance to meet high calibre management teams and investment professionals from some of the best performing investment firms in the world.
Participants gain invaluable insight by participating in our Investment Decision Meeting, which convenes weekly. This forum is where key portfolio decisions are debated and made. Interaction with the broader team deepens graduate knowledge, offering expansive insight into financial markets and the asset classes across which Wellcome invests.
Learning and Development
Early into your tenure, you will collaborate with your manager to map out a tailored personal development plan. This blueprint will outline the specific training and developmental objectives to be achieved through practical involvement as well as specialised training delivered by both internal and external facilitators.
Training possibilities include, but are not limited to:
Investment Management Certificate (IMC) accreditation
Financial analysis and forecasting
Effective communication and presentation skills
Critical thinking and negotiation techniques
As one of our recent graduates commented:
“Wellcome’s Investments Graduate Scheme allows individuals to work on a wide range of projects across various asset classes and learn about what it means to be a truly long-term investor. The team has a very collaborative culture, and it is extremely rewarding to know that you are contributing to Wellcome’s mission.”
You will also be matched with a mentor to guide your growth and optimise your experiences within Wellcome.
