Are you looking for a new challenge and want to join a successful and growing organization dedicated to creating social impact? We’re looking for a skillful writer who can translate key messages and research findings into compelling written content for specific audiences. You will write, edit, and publish content for the web, social media, and other formats.

What does a Science/Content Writer do?

  • Create compelling and accurate content that raises the profile of BITNA’s diverse and innovative work across multiple platforms and outlets. For example, we may want to highlight the launch of new initiatives, results and recommendations from projects, the production of timely policy-relevant reports, and the publication of high-quality academic articles and literature.

  • Write with a consistent voice across multiple platforms including web, emails, marketing content, videos, and blogs.

  • Contribute to BITNA’s content strategy working directly with the Head of Strategy on new ideas and future efforts.

  • Maintain a content library, regularly review and update or retire content, and serve as the internal point of contact for any content requests.

  • Re-structure and edit content produced by the team.

  • Seek new opportunities to pitch story ideas and content to media.

  • Support BITNA’s social media presence.

Tone/Style details

  • We aim for a conversational, easygoing tone; our work can be quite technical but we prefer to explain it in simple, jargon-free terms.

  • Materials may not follow conventional 5-paragraph essay format. We prefer short concise paragraphs that are easy to read, and use formatting to make posts easy to skim through.

  • We always want our work to inform actions or decisions; the “so what” should be clear to the relevant audiences.

What makes a great Science/Content Writer at BIT?

We are looking for people who understand what we do, share our values, and are keen to learn and develop their expertise. While we are looking for candidates with the skills listed below, we expect to provide training and development support in some of the areas.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills are essential. You need to be able to communicate concepts from behavioral science to a non-specialist audience. Spanish language skills are desirable to support BITNA’s work in Latin America.

  • Familiarity with the following domains is an advantage: local, state, federal government; philanthropic funders; the not-for-profit sector.

  • Record of writing effectively for a range of audiences, ideally demonstrated in a professional portfolio.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to communicate with management to incorporate feedback and draw out stories and content.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects with different objectives simultaneously.

  • Ability to present research findings in a compelling but accurate format; this may require some familiarity with research methods in order to assess appropriate language around causality, generalizability, etc.

  • Adept at synthesizing and understanding research results; turning technical concepts into compelling, well-written narratives.

  • Graphic design (e.g. for infographic development) and SEO copywriting experience are a plus but not required

How to apply

We use a great platform called Applied to reduce bias in the recruitment process. You will need to answer a few work-based questions which will be anonymously marked by members of our team. Our selection is based on performance in these questions, rather than looking at your CV.

Candidates with the top-scoring answers will be invited to a structured interview where you get to meet some of the team. At the interview stage you will be asked questions that reflect the role and also to complete a work-based task, so you have the chance to demonstrate your skills. It’s at this stage we first see your CV. We always give all applicants feedback, no matter what stage your application reaches.
