Job Description

Purpose of the Role

Our highly regarded and experienced tax team are now looking to recruit a trainee to join the team to train across all areas of personal tax. In this role, you can expect to work with the wider private client team, supporting senior colleagues with their client portfolios. You will be given support and guidance in all tasks that you are asked to undertake and gain exposure across the wider business and learning about the different ways in which we support and engage with our clients.

As you progress, you can expect to be given more responsibility and the opportunity to assist on complex tax matters. You will work alongside Managers and Partners gaining first-hand knowledge of what their roles entail and we would look to support you with your professional tax qualifications (ATT).

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Preparation and filing of tax returns

  • Liaising with clients, banks and other third parties

  • Dealing with HMRC queries

  • Attending client meetings

  • Data gathering and preparing internal management statistics

  • Assisting with proposals

  • Assisting with articles/blogs for website/magazines/Twitter etc

  • Undertaking research on behalf of Managers/Partners

 

Skills and Experience to be developed

Technical Expertise

·        Studying for ATT (or equivalent) if direct entry into tax.

·        Understands & applies basic tax practice, risk management and quality control protocols while seeking guidance where appropriate.

·        Prepares basic tax computations/returns.

·        Competent in the use of tax software applications.

·        Prepares basic written work on tax topics relevant to client assignments.

Enterprise

·        Seek out opportunities for work and feedback for areas of improvement.

·        Aware of the relationship between chargeable hours recorded, fees etc. 

·        Monitors own contribution and is aware of targets and requirements of grade.

·        Beginning awareness of budgets and able to analyse WIP on an ongoing basis.

Business Building

·        Shows enthusiasm and represents the firm and its values.

·        Identifies potential constructive recommendations for clients.

·        Develops a network of contacts within the firm.

·        Demonstrates a basic understanding of the client’s needs.

Client Relationships

·        Recognises that good client relationships are critical to our business.

·        Chooses appropriate mode of communication with client – face to face/phone/email/letter.

·        Understands that clients are external and internal (other teams within the firm).

·        Is punctual, diligent, enthusiastic, and dresses smartly (in line with MKS policy, subject to client preferences).

·        Communicates clearly and accessibly - orally and in writing.

Delivery

·        Takes responsibility for allocated assignments /tasks.

·        Manages own time and clearly communicates progress on assignments to manager/team.

·        Is confident and asks for assistance/advice in a timely manner.

Inter-personal skills

·        Seeks out and engages in briefings and debriefings.

·        Works effectively within a team to ensure the overall assignment/task is completed effectively.

·        Listens carefully to instructions and ensures they are fully carried out.

  • have an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) and 112 UCAS points from three A-levels (or equivalent)
