Job Description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the ABI is the people.  We’re hugely proud that 100% of our people feel colleagues within their team respect each other and we feel empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment and embrace all our differences as every voice matters. If that sounds like your kind of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

We are open to flexible, part time and/or job share working – please let us know if this would be your preference. We’re currently working in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

We’re looking for a Public Affairs Adviser to help maintain our effective and influential political profile.

Join the ABI as we navigate the ever-changing political landscape as part of a talented team at a high-profile trade association, delivering effective parliamentary engagement and political intelligence on key policy areas affecting one of the UK’s biggest and most successful industries.

You’ll have a whole host of opportunities to network with a wide range of MPs, parliamentarians and government departments – not to mention lots of industry stakeholders.

We welcome people who are new to insurance (most of us were when we joined!) – as well as those with experience. Have a read of our key facts document if you would like to know more about the industry we work in.

What’s the job?

  • Work with the Manager, Public Affairs and Assistant Director, Head of External Affairs, to deliver political engagement and legislative monitoring on key policy areas.

  •  Influence future policy and legislation through engagement and negotiation.

  •  Prepare and communicate materials including: briefings ahead of Parliamentary debates, responding to Parliamentary Questions and Ministerial Statements, helping co-ordinate the ABI’s work on legislation, Select Committee Inquiries, Government consultations and All Party Parliamentary Groups.

  • Co-ordinate and implement programmes of engagement with parliamentarians and stakeholders, including coordinating the delivery of ABI events in parliament, representing the ABI and insurance industry individually, and alongside senior colleagues, and ABI party conference activity.

  • Share relevant, accurate political information with colleagues and respond to developments in Parliament and Whitehall.

  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders including ABI member representatives, parliamentarians and government officials.

What skills do you need?

  • Political nous – you understand the mechanisms for effective engagement with a range of stakeholders and have in-depth knowledge of UK politics.

  • Excellent relationship management skills – you’re an empathetic, confident communicator who can build rapport with a wide variety of stakeholders.

  • Lobbying skills – you know how to lobby and can influence and persuade politicians and policy makers.

  • Teamwork – you get stuck in, work proactively with others and are comfortable working at pace.

  • Organisation – you proactively organise and prioritise a busy workload with exceptional attention to detail.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate the ABI’s values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.

Inclusion matters to us:

We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and we run our application process a bit differently – we don’t assess based on CV or past experience. We’ll ask application questions which are relevant to the role and the skills we need to ensure our process is fair, inclusive and everyone has equal opportunity to demonstrate their suitability.

We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer and are committed to making reasonable adjustments where required. Additionally, where practicable. We offer an interview to disabled candidates who meet the minimum requirements for a role. To discuss in more detail, please contact careers@abi.org.uk
