Purpose of Role 

To contribute to Art Fund’s ambitious fundraising targets by raising income from Art Partners (Art Fund’s patrons programme) and a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals.   

The post holder will deliver effective strategies for regular giving through developing the Art Partners programme – leading all aspects including recruitment, stewardship and strategy for growth – and fundraising appeals and campaigns. Working closely with the Head of Individual Giving, the post holder will cultivate individual donors to secure gifts towards Art Fund’s charitable programme.  

Key Accountabilities  

Art Partners: growth and retention 

  • Implement and contribute to a robust Art Partners recruitment strategy to increase the numbers of members (target of a 25% increase by 2025) and to build philanthropic engagement with Art Fund’s 5-year plan.  

  • Maintain high retention rates through devising a distinctive, appealing and evolving programme with the Senior Events Producer, as well as through maintaining excellent communications and one-to-one stewardship with the support of Development Coordinator 

  • To collaborate with colleagues across Art Fund to create and deliver opportunities and events to enhance the Art Partner membership experience through in-person activities, communications and digital development. 

  • Manage and determine income and expenditure budgets for Art Partners; maintain high standards of accuracy and efficiency in the processing, recording and thanking of all donations encouraging a close relationship with finance and database colleagues. 

  • Work closely with current Art Partners and Chair, Trustees, artists and Art Fund contacts to identify new prospects and strengthen existing relationships to support income growth. 

 

Strategic development of regular giving 

  • With the Head of Individual Giving, to develop and implement an annual fundraising campaign to secure gifts from a diverse pool of individual donors and spotlight Art Fund activity – from refining the fundraising pitch and proposal, to making direct asks 

  • Develop compelling communications (from mailings to films and digital campaigns) which raise awareness of Art Fund’s charitable objectives, impact and how individual donors can make a difference  

  • Working across the organisation identify strands of Art Fund activity which will have wide appeal among individual donors as one-off asks or long-term fundraising initiatives.   

  • Maintain knowledge of best practice in the sector, especially across Patrons schemes, to ensure that Art Fund’s offer remains competitive, evolving and delivered to the highest standard. 

 

Major Giving 

  • Working with the Prospect Development Manager, to identify and manage prospective individual donors to generate a sustainable and robust prospect pipeline for Art Partner membership, appeals and individual gifts 

  • To plan and lead approaches to individuals appropriate to their interests, level of giving and Art Fund priorities, contributing to both project funding targets and an unrestricted income target. 

  • Develop Art Partners as an entry point for major giving by effectively articulating our charitable programme and purpose, identifying those best able to give additionally and getting to understand their interests and motivations 

  • With the wider Development team, create new opportunities to cultivate and steward individual donors beyond Art Partners utilising forthcoming opportunities, events and the project pipeline. 

 

Supporter care and administration 

  • Work closely with the Development Coordinator to ensure communications with individual donors are timely, accurate and compelling.  

  • Provide regular income reports on Art Partner income and expenditure, identifying areas of risk 

  • Take a proactive approach to improving existing administrative processes and ensuring that the Art Partners scheme remains consistent with Gift Aid, GDPR fundraising regulations 

  • Participate in wider Art Fund digital/data/business process activities to ensure Art Fund systems meet the needs of individual giving.  

 

 

Other Activities, Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Other duties as requested by the Head of Individual Giving or Director of Development. 

  • Work within the guidelines and policies as set out in the Art Fund staff handbook 

  • Actively participate in the wider life of the Art Fund  

  • Will be required to work on events outside normal working hours on occasion 

 

Reporting Lines  

Reports to Head of Individual Giving, line manages Development Coordinator 

 Close working relationship with the Director of Development, Senior Events Producer, Prospect Development Manager, Development and Events Assistant and Trusts and Foundations team.  

 

Works directly with Art Fund Director, senior management team and Trustees as necessary 

PERSON DESCRIPTION 

Knowledge 

An excellent understanding of donor cultivation and stewardship 

 

A thorough knowledge of prospect research techniques and resources  

 

Detailed knowledge of GDPR regulations and best practice in managing individual donor data.  

 

Knowledge and experience of relationship management databases (CRM).  

 

Knowledge / experience of relationship management databases 

 

IT literacy (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) 

 

Up-to-date knowledge of HMRC rules on Gift-Aid and tax efficient giving 

 

Knowledge of digital marketing strategies  

 

Understanding of Google Analytics and ability to use statistics to inform strategies 

 

Knowledge of museum and gallery collections nationally and broad knowledge of art genres and artists represented in public collections.  

Qualifications

Fundraising qualification or relevant training, particularly around major giving, project management and stakeholder management.

Experience of developing funding propositions, including proposals and reports, for an individual donor and / or groups of donors.  

 

Direct experience of managing a Patrons membership scheme 

 

Experience of working within a Development team in an arts organisation  

 

Experience of communicating fundraising messages through diverse channels (including in person, in writing and through digital channels) 

 

Experience of working with agencies to develop promotional campaigns 

 

Experience of developing third party partnerships to reach new audiences
