Job Description

Accounting Manager supervises senior and staff accountants in accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general bookkeeping functions. They are responsible for the final approval of employee and vendor payments that come through Certify and other systems.

What does an Accounting Manager do?

You will be involved in the following activities:

  • Responsible for approving $10+ million in schoolwide payables annually and oversight of a multi-million tuition budget, including indirect location and HQ revenue. 

  • Shared leadership role in planning and initiating improvements in accounting processes.

  • Responsible for direct supervision of planning and initiating accounts receivable and payable, and NOLS credit card system improvements and maintaining internal controls.  

  • Works with Information Technology to initiate and plan improvements in the NOLS student database applications. 

  • Responsible for cross-training in A/R, A/P, Payroll, Location accounting and other duties as assigned.  

  • Communicates with students, parents, collection agencies, tuition protection insurance companies, government agencies, credit card companies and banks. 

  • Review and final approval of employee, customer, and vendor expenditures for compliance, reasonableness, and expense account distribution. 

  • Facilitate and initiate changes and improvements to Certify. Help maintain user set up and configuration. Collaborate with Certify external and internal team on processes, feature requests, and to resolve any system issues.

  • Annually report Washington and Wyoming unclaimed property and review 1099 IRS submissions.

  • Supervision: hire, train, support, evaluate accountant roles in payables, receivables, and general accounting functions. Coordinate workloads for effective cross-training.

  • Cross train in payroll, accounts payable and receivable, NOLS credit cards, and location accounting areas. 

  • Educate NOLS staff and external contacts on procedures.

  • Position requires a 4-year bachelor’s degree with 2+ years relevant experience or 4 to 5 years bookkeeping and supervisory experience.  

  • A background in general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll required. 

  • Ability to work closely in a team/group setting. 

  • Maintains positive and productive relationships with internal and external audiences.

  • Must be able to balance multiple priorities and work independently.

  • Must be proficient with spreadsheet applications and general ledger software.  

  • Must have experience with database applications.  

  • Requires strong supervision, organizational, computer, communication and analytical skills. 

  • Experience with Certify, Microsoft Business Central, and ADP software preferred. 

  • Knowledge of or NOLS experience preferred.
