Summary of role: 

Energy Systems has undergone a period of sustained growth over the past few years and now includes for 25 engineering consultants and subject matter experts with a primary focus on the built environment and manufacturing. Our primary work involves: -

  • Supporting commercial clients understand their carbon footprints, develop net zero and low carbon strategies and targets, and develop engineering solutions to meet those targets.

  • Design of low carbon decentralised energy systems from energy centres to primary network for private and public sector clients.

  • Design of low carbon heating and power solutions within buildings for private and public sector clients.

Energy Systems clients cover a wide range of industries as diverse as broadcasting, banks, retailers, utilities, manufacturing for chemicals, drinks, food, engineered components etc. These clients have processes ranging from data centres, logistics, water and effluent treatment, power & heat networks and manufacturing process – all of which require decarbonisation.


To support further growth the Energy Systems team needs to recruit a Contracts Manager reporting to Director, Energy Systems. This is a Senior role which sits within Energy Systems (ES) which will be key in shaping the future development and growth of the consultancy service area. The role requires an energetic and fastidious individual with a passion to deliver sustainable performance and raise the profile of the Anthesis Group in this area.


An essential requirement will be to contribute to the delivery of projects and provide commercial and technical oversight and quality assurance of deliverables.


As Contracts Manager you will lead on various stages of energy generation and efficiency projects, including feasibility, preliminary and detailed design and construction support.

Key areas of the role will also include developing new propositions and providing strategic input into the growth of our team, supporting the development of systems and Intellectual Property and working across the team to support knowledge transfer and education.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Working on projects from inception to completion, the role requires the person to take ownership and responsibility for the commercial and financial aspects of projects and the teams working on them. Building and managing relationships is key.

  • Carry out negotiation and completion of contracts for Anthesis and clients.
    Anthesis provide consultancy and technical services through sub-contractors to clients. This role involves negotiating both client & sub-contractor contracts & as necessary obtaining approval from the group commercial director.

  • Providing cost estimation expertise for valuation of contracts both for Anthesis and clients in preparing proposals and projects.

  • Carry out contractor prequalification on behalf of both Anthesis and their clients.

  • Preparation of tenders and administration of tendering processes both for Anthesis and clients. This could be both in the public and private sector.

  • Acting as contract administrator for client contracts under JCT, NEC & other forms of contract. This includes raising works orders, variations, carrying out valuations and reporting etc in line with contract timelines.

  • Facilitate dispute resolution between clients and contractors when required.

  • Produce and provide accurate forecasts of project cost to completion and final value

  • Continually monitor projected costs to completion in line with budget

  • Provide input in construction project commercial/legal/strategic meetings

Relationship Management:

  • Achieving project profitability. Tracking costs, managing and forecasting spend, ensuring that work is kept to budget. Manage resources. Manage invoicing.

  • Providing support to Sales colleagues ensuring proposals are correctly scoped and priced.

  • Support the development of new propositions, identifying market needs and subsequent opportunities. Spotting innovations and making the business case for pursuing them.

  • Supporting the development of IP and systems that enhance the quality and efficiency of our client work.

Qualifications/education level required:

  • Degree in surveying, STEM subject or equivalent,

  • Background as Cost Engineer, Contracts Engineer, Quantity Surveyor or Estimators

  • Member of RICS or ACostE or working towards membership.


Special requirements:

  • As the role includes travel, visiting clients across the UK and on occasions overseas, and keeping in contact with internationally based clients there is a requirement to be flexible around hours of working.

  • The offer is conditional on confirmation of your right to work in the UK, plus provision of a satisfactory reference.

  • Full UK driving licence.

Relationship Management:

  • Manage multiple client relationships, liaise with clients to determine their requirements, assist clients with on-going enquires. 

  • Develop strategic partnerships with other companies and institutions that enhance the effectiveness of the work we deliver 

 Commercials:

  • Achieving project profitability. Tracking costs, managing and forecasting spend, ensuring that work is kept to budget. Manage resources. Manage invoicing.

  • Providing commercial sales support to Sales colleagues ensuring proposals are correctly scoped and priced.

 Strategic:

  • Support the development of new propositions, identifying market needs and subsequent opportunities. Spotting innovations and making the business case for pursuing them. 

  • Supporting the development of IP and systems that enhance the quality and efficiency of our client work 

  • With anticipated growth, the role has the potential to develop, leading a team of engineers and responsibility in mentoring less experienced staff. 

Relevant experience required:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a similar client-facing role in associated with Building Services either in the public or private sector.
