Job Description

As the Budget Manager you will act as a business partner and develop a deep understanding of all aspects of NOLS business model and operations. Lead monthly forecasting for all departments, working directly with the CFO and business leaders to develop a comprehensive review and monthly update for the forecast. Coordinate the annual operating budget and capital plan, provide analysis of operating and capital expenses versus approved plans, assist with project development and expense analysis, and make recommendations to improve expense management. What does a Budget Manager do?

This role is in our Finance team. Key responsibilities your work will be focused on:

  • Monitor and report monthly operating expense and variance explanations

  • Monitor and report capital spending 

  • Coordinate and prepare operating and capital plans

  • Assists management in the preparation and analysis of capital requests

  • Develop operating, capital, and cash flow forecast

  • Develop a deep understanding of NOLS business and operations

What makes a great Budget Manager at NOLS?

  • Ability to explain financial and accounting concepts to non-financial employees

  • Experience with budget tracking, variance reporting, and cost analysis

  • Experience in a leadership role preferred

  • Ability to build and make presentations to senior management

  • Solid skills with spreadsheet (Excel), presentation (PowerPoint), and word processing (Microsoft Word)

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • 5 - 10 years experience in Finance and/or Accounting

In your first 6 months, you will: 

  • Work closely with the CFO, Finance and Operations teams to gain a complete understanding of NOLS financial reporting systems, general ledger accounts, financial statements, and business operations for our world-class wilderness education school.

  • Implement and oversee a monthly operations performance review and forecast process

  • Build relationships with key stakeholders to gain buy-in to the financial planning process
