Job Description

We are looking for an experienced finance manager who can operate at both a hands-on and strategic level to support our finance team as we scale our employee owned trust. You will report into our Commercial Operations Lead.

About us

We’re a leading employee-owned digital agency that works with the public and third sectors. We’ve made it our job to fix some of the really difficult stuff in government. We’re proud to have supported critical national infrastructure through the pandemic, hosting the NHS England website and Homes for Ukraine.

At dxw we hold our values high. We work for the public good and aim to make a positive impact through everything we do. We work in the open wherever we can, sharing the way we work and our culture in our playbook. You’ll find our code on GitHub.

We became employee owned last year and we love it! A trust owns 90% of our shares on behalf of all current and future dxw staff, and staff get to influence the direction of the company and share in its profits. It also gives us the freedom to work on projects we're passionate about and where we know we can add real value.

We work remotely with people based all around the UK. We keep in touch all the time for work and for social things, and some of us get together in person in our Leeds HQ and coworking spaces in London when we can.

If you care about making public services better then dxw is the place for you!

About the role

This is a new role joining our Commercial function, which is a team of 4 led by our Finance Director. The team is responsible for managing our financial information which allows us to sustainable grow our trust. It also works alongside dxw delivery teams and our clients, to ensure we have contracts that enable us to provide value to our clients and be profitable.

This is a ‘business partner’ type role, providing support for two of our business units (with potentially more being added in the future).  You will be responsible for the end-to-end processes for those units, from recording purchase and sales invoices, through payroll records and producing management accounts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • correctly coding and recording purchase invoices and expense claims

  • raising sales invoices in a timely manner, and following up on credit control

  • working with business unit colleagues to ensure our forecasts are accurate for both revenue and costs.

  • monthly reporting submissions for government framework contracts.

  • posting journals for monthly management accounts.

  • processing payroll changes, in collaboration with our people team,

  • reconciliation of bank & payment card accounts

  • Other ad hoc reporting and management accounting

There are some organisational-wide processes that are currently undertaken by our current Finance Manager, that you’ll provide cover for from time to time:

  • VAT returns,

  • PAYE/NIC submissions

  • Bank reconciliations

As a member of our employee trust, you might also take an active role in our staff council, and other community groups that support our growth.

About you

We anticipate you’ll have an accountancy qualification (AAT or above) and at least three years experience in a similar role.

After 14 years, we’re about to embark on a new phase of growth as an employee owned trust (EOT). With that in mind, we are looking for someone who shares our values, and would like to apply their experience to support our ambitions to scale.

You’ll be willing to work with colleagues to improve their financial awareness but to also seek feedback to improve our commercial processes too.

Collaboration is key to everything we do, so you’ll have a strong track record of working cross-functionally with colleagues at all levels. At the same time, we’d expect you to be a good and confident communicator who is able to handle challenging situations and manage expectations.

Join us!

We’re committed to making our teams as diverse as we can and to creating an environment where everyone feels included and can be themselves. We welcome non-traditional paths into dxw and aim to hire the right person for the role, not some combination of keywords. We especially encourage candidates historically excluded from the digital design or tech sector to apply, including but not limited to people of colour, women and people whose gender doesn’t always align neatly with “man” or “woman”, parents and carers, people with visible and invisible disabilities and atypical neurotypes, people who didn’t go to university, and people from underprivileged backgrounds.

You can learn more about dxw, how we work and what matters to us on our website and by reading our playbook.

Our public sector work means that appointments will be made subject to a background check and you must be located and eligible to work in the UK at the point of application. Unfortunately we are currently unable to offer visa sponsorship.
