Job Description

When meeting us, you’ll quickly discover that the best thing about the Association of British Insurers is the people.  We’re hugely proud that 98% of our people think individual differences are respected and we are empowered to bring our whole self to work without fear of judgment. If that sounds like your sort of culture, read on to find out how you can join us.

We are open to flexible, part time and/or job share working – please let us know if this would be your preference. We work in a hybrid way with at least 40% of time in the office.

We’re looking for a Policy Adviser to work on the development of policy on commercial insurance. This covers insurance relating to areas such as terrorism, professional indemnity, commercial property, financial lines, casualty, credit and political risk as well as other emerging risks.

We welcome people who are new to insurance (most of us were when we joined) – as well as those with experience.

What’s the job?

  • Engage with our commercial members, Lloyd’s and London Markets and work with colleagues and the Government to consider solutions to public policy challenges where insurance coverage can be challenging to provide.

  • Develop industry responses to reputational challenges facing the commercial insurance market, including managing the industry’s response to major incidents such as a significant cyber data breach.

  • Lead and contribute to policy development work with our members including supporting and facilitating meetings for various senior ABI Committees.

  • React to developments in policy or the media that could impact on commercial insurance issues and help our members navigate these issues effectively.

  • Develop areas of knowledge and expertise on insurance innovation including InsurTech, digital transformation and the ‘internet of things’.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Ability to understand complex policy issues and risks – you can get up to speed quickly with the technical detail.

  • An analytical mind – you use evidence to back up your decisions.

  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills – you know how to approach stakeholders of all levels and backgrounds.

  • Demonstrable lobbying skills – you can influence and persuade senior people in member firms, Government, regulators and elsewhere.

  • Effective presentation skills – you know how to tailor you message to your audience.

We encourage you to apply, even if you don’t have all the skills above right now.

Throughout the interview and assessment process, we will be looking for you to demonstrate our values; We are Brave; We take Ownership; We are Appreciative; We are Human and We are Curious.

Inclusion matters to us

We welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds and we run our application process a bit differently – we don’t assess based on your CV. We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer and are committed to making adjustments to help you perform at your best in our recruitment process.
