Through our work, we demonstrate how heritage can contribute powerfully to help the country meet pressing societal issues – supporting places and communities and helping create good homes, good jobs and good growth.

Historic England has a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as our Historic Places Regeneration Officer.

There are two, full time, permanent positions available.

The location of this role is London, with regular opportunities to visit places throughout Greater London and the South East.

We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive defined benefit pension scheme to which we make 28.97% employer contributions, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the country and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.

What you will be doing

The work of the Historic Places Regeneration Team demonstrates the transformational power of heritage in creating successful places. The team works collaboratively to deliver for people and places where we can make the biggest difference.

The team leads place-shaping activity and investment across the region. It is responsible for the initiation, development, delivery, evaluation and celebration of targeted interventions and engagement in priority places. To support its work, the Historic Places Regeneration Team draws on the breadth of expertise and tools we have available, including the heritage at risk programme, engagement, expert advice, grants and research, to effect positive and long-lasting change.

Meaningful partnerships with regional and local authorities, businesses, community groups, charities and other national agencies are central to the work of the team, helping to deliver creative projects that leverage the value of heritage to deliver wider societal benefits. We work at a range of scales and degrees of engagement in diverse places across the region.

The Historic Places Regeneration Officer will support delivery of our programme for priority places, working closely with the Historic Places Regeneration Advisers and other colleagues in the Historic Places Regeneration Team. Regeneration Officers will draw on their skills, whether project management, archaeology, urban design and regeneration, community engagement, etc., to devise, manage and deliver exemplary and impactful projects.

Regeneration Officers make full use of Historic England’s breath of expertise and tools, including grants (both Historic England and DCMS funded) and the heritage at risk programme, and they work with external partners and with a variety of internal colleagues to transform the heritage that matters to communities through heritage led regeneration.

Who we are looking for

  • Experience of partnership working

  • Experience of assessing, managing, delivering grant funded projects

  • Experience of working with grassroots / community organisations

  • Ability to advocate for the value of heritage in place based regeneration

  • Ability to solve problems and work creatively to achieve results

  • Readiness to work with a range of heritage assets, including archaeology, historic buildings, landscapes and townscapes

Please note your application will be scored and assessed against the above criteria.
