Job Description

About The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) and the Data Governance Internship

Have you heard about TAF? We’re a regional climate agency that invests in low-carbon solutions for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and helps scale them up for broad implementation. We are experienced leaders and collaborate with stakeholders in the private, public and non-profit sectors who have ideas and opportunities for reducing carbon emissions. We advance the most promising concepts by investing, providing grants, influencing policies and running programs.

As a Data Governance Coordinator, you’ll help strengthen how TAF manages, organizes, and uses data across the organization. You’ll work closely with both our Retrofit Accelerator team, who produces and manages large volumes of program, technical, and performance data, and our Operations team, which oversees data governance, records management, and compliance with organizational and City of Toronto practices.

You will explore best practices, map our current landscape, identify gaps, and recommend improvements that will support both program delivery and TAF‑wide operational needs. This is a great role for someone who enjoys organizing complex information, solving problems, and connecting dots across teams.

What you’ll work on:

Data Governance Research & Documentation

  • Research data governance practices that support a public‑sector organization and reflect the data‑sharing needs of working with public, private, and community partners.

  • Summarize your research in clear, accessible guidance and reference materials that help staff understand how to manage and use data more effectively.

  • Share key insights through reports, simple visuals, and presentations that help teams see opportunities for improvement.

Internal Data Audit & Process Mapping

  • Design questionnaires or surveys and meet with staff across teams to learn how they currently collect, store, and use data, and what challenges they face.

  • Map out what data exists across TAF, where it lives, how it moves through different tools and workflows, and who relies on it.

  • Identify gaps, bottlenecks, and opportunities to strengthen data quality, documentation, and consistency.

  • Translate your findings into clear notes and suggestions that help teams improve how they organize and use their data.

Record & Systems Improvement

  • Draw on insights from the audit to organize information into categories and support the creation of an updated record retention schedule aligned with best practices.

  • Recommend improvements to shared drive structures, naming conventions, and storage practices to make information easier for staff to find and use.

Key details:

Compensation: $28/hour, plus financial support for wifi associated with work. A laptop will be provided.

Employment term:  full time (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) for approximately four months between May 4 – August 28. Flexible schedule and hours to be determined in consultation with your manager.

Location: Hybrid, with two days a week in TAF’s Toronto office (at Union Station). Some travel within the GTHA will be required (no vehicle required).

Perks:

  • Experience what it’s like to work in the climate sector, with a team of climate action professionals.

  • Enjoy socials, lunch & learns, training sessions and other staff-wide experiences.

  • Benefit from other hands-on learning and networking opportunities.

The kind of skills and experience we're looking for:

  • Studying or recently graduated from a field related to data governance, data management, data science, information studies, or related field.

  • Strong research skills and ability to organize complex information.

  • Interest in how data is structured, stored, and used to support decisions.

  • Comfortable asking questions, mapping processes, and identifying gaps.

  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets and learning new data tools.

  • Clear writing skills for summarizing findings and recommendations.

  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to work independently.

  • Interest in climate action and low‑carbon solutions is an asset.

Applying to intern at TAF:

We know that strong candidates bring a range of experiences that may not line up perfectly with every requirement. If this role excites you and you believe you’d be a great fit, we encourage you to apply.

Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply.

Our application process uses two short, job‑related questions in an anonymized platform so we can focus on your skills and approach. If you need accommodations, email jobs@taf.ca.

Please do not use AI to generate your responses. Our team reads every submission, and AI‑written answers tend to blend together, making it harder to get a sense of you. Using your own words gives you the fairest shot, and it also makes our reviewers (your potential future colleagues!) much happier.

We review anonymized responses first, then we look at résumés. Top candidates will be invited to interviews and a brief assessment. Everyone will hear back once the process concludes.

We will begin reviewing applications on a rolling basis starting March 26 and may close the posting early if we have enough qualified candidates, so we encourage applicants to apply early
