Job Description

If seasonal (May-Sept), this role is specifically an Evacuation Coordinator role. If Salaried, this position fills mostly an Evacuation Coordinator role with opportunity for some Program Supervising in the spring and fall seasons as needed.

The Evacuation Coordinator supports field courses based out of Lander, the Rocky Mountain River Base (RMRB), NOLS Teton Valley, and Three Peaks Ranch in a variety of circumstances via the evacuation phone. The Evacuation Coordinator works closely with the Evacuation Supervisor and Leadership Teams at Rocky Mountain locations to coordinate all aspects of in-field support as well as instructor and student field evacuations. This role supports instructors and students in the field through logistical, medical or behavioral issues. This role is crucial to the function of successful field courses. 

The objective of the Rocky Mountain Program Supervisor position is to work as part of the Rocky Mountain program team to supervise field faculty, ensure program quality, and promote high-quality educational experiences for all Lander-based field courses. The program supervisor provides instructor teams with curriculum, route, and risk management support. They facilitate conversations within instructor teams to support success in team function. They give feedback, evaluate performance, and mentor career development for field staff.

What does an Evacuation Coordinator do?

The Evacuation Coordinator job is a dynamic job where everyday is different! The Evacuation coordinator gets to problem solve, think creatively and make a big impact on the support that instructors receive in the field. In this job, you get to work through questions like what trends are we seeing in student behavior this season? What training topics do instructors need? How can we work more effectively to support teams in the field?

In this role you will be the main person responsible for the following activities:

  • Carry the evacuation phone 24/7 for 3-4 days/3-4 nights in a row.

  • Coach instructors in tactics and decisions regarding evacuations, student performance/behavioral issues, and course dynamics.

  • Supervise and coordinate logistics for Rocky Mountain evacuations.

  • Make parent/emergency contact phone calls related to student behavioral issues and/or evacuations. Communicate decision making and next steps with clarity to emergency contacts. 

  • Facilitate the experience of evacuated or expelled students with respect, compassion, and accountability. 

  • Coach field staff on risk management documentation and decision-making; contribute to NOLS Accepted Field Practices updates and development.

  • Support Three Peaks Ranch, the River Base and Teton Valley with evacuation concerns as necessary.

  • Calculate evacuation expenses for students and submit reports to the NOLS finance department.

  • Train field and program staff on all aspects of the Rocky Mountain evacuations (protocols and procedures, documentation and paperwork, challenging phone conversations).

  • Collaborate and work closely together with the Evacuation Supervisor to create vision and systems for the Evacuation office. 

  • Must be a NOLS field instructor with experience Course Leading or hold similar experience at another organization; an assessed lead outdoor educator with significant applicable experience in Outdoor Risk Management and Evacuation operations.

  • Support field faculty in delivering exceptional student experiences by providing growth-oriented briefings, curriculum resources, debriefings, and evaluations. 

  • Help instructors start their process of working together through facilitating high-quality teambuilds. 

  • Apply the NOLS Field Instructor Skills in evaluating instructor performance and making recommendations for instructors' work level. Actively guide and mentor field staff in their professional development at NOLS. 

  • Review and organize all course-related paperwork. Write timely and thorough faculty evaluations. Advocate for field staff and be clear and thorough when making promotion or demotion recommendations. 

  • May be required to act as a field instructor in the case of injury/illness and possible unavailability of field staff.

  • Ability to task-switch quickly between field phone calls and organizing logistics in Lander, while keeping track of all details related to different situations being managed simultaneously from the field. 

  • Be able to think creatively in relation to field evacuation logistics, student support in town and utilizing team resources. 

  • Ability to execute a higher volume of work within a shorter work week. 

  • Be a team player, within the program department and throughout all NOLS Rocky Mountain departments. Contribute to an environment that encourages field staff and students to feel relaxed, supported, and focused going into the field and while on course. 

In your first 6 months, you will: 

  • Contribute to Rocky Mountain Program Team vision and goals for the season and future seasons. 

  • Contribute input on bigger picture projects based on instructor/student needs with the Evacuation Supervisor and sometimes other stakeholders in Expedition Operations.

  • Organize, input, and review risk management paperwork for the summer season.  

  • Collaborate on refining evacuation operational systems with the Rocky Mountain locations (RMRB, TPR, TVB).
