Job Description
Summary
We are the public body that looks after England’s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.
Do you care about the rural environment? Do you want to make a difference for rural heritage? We are looking for a Heritage Service Manager to join the team.
This role is 0.5 FTE fixed term contract to the end March 2025 with potential for extension.
This role can be based at the Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester, Newcastle or York offices. The national hybrid remote team will be geographically spread across our regional offices (as above plus London). Members of the team will be expected to work nationally depending on expertise and case volumes.
This is an exciting time to join Historic England as we set up the newly-formed Countryside Stewardship Heritage Service to support applications to and monitor delivery of projects from Defra’s Higher Tier Capital Grants and PA2 Feasibility Study funding streams for rural heritage in stewardship.
This is a great opportunity to support owners of rural heritage in stewardship deliver environmental gains for their communities, heritage and the rural environment.
What you will be doing
The Heritage Service Manager (Countryside Stewardship) will provide leadership to the newly-formed Countryside Stewardship Heritage Service. Working alongside the Heritage Technical Manager (Countryside Stewardship), you will be responsible for:
· Leading and managing a cross-disciplinary team of Heritage Service Officers (Countryside Stewardship).
· Developing the team to deliver ambitious casework targets.
· Developing the capabilities and managing the workloads of the team.
· Line managing 4 FTE of Heritage Service Officers (Countryside Stewardship)
· Lead the monitoring of the delivery of the agreements.
· Reporting on the service’s delivery to the Board, Rural Payments Agency and our funder, Defra.
· Representing the team internally and externally.
· Taking delegated responsibility and delivering the challenging targets and timescale.
· Allocate and prioritise casework across the team to deliver against client and funder needs.
National salary range: £36,603 pro-rata
Greater London + salary range: £39,408 pro-rata
What we are looking for
Considerable experience of leading a team delivering advice to multiple clients in a challenging timescale.
Constructive and creative problem-solving skills. Ability to deal with pressure and challenge.
Effective negotiation, influencing and problem-solving skills.
An understanding of the policy areas covered by the Countryside Stewardship programme
An open-minded approach and interest in engaging a wider range of perspectives to broaden understanding.
Substantial experience of project management.
