Job Description

Program Leader

Startmate is looking to hire a Program Leader to help us massively scale our program offering. The new Program Leader will be a program generalist, focused on building new communities and launching, designing and facilitating the new programs. They are going to play a crucial part in our goal of launching 10 new programs next year and contribute to the broader company mission of making Australia and New Zealand the best place in the world to build a startup.

You’ll be building programs from 0 to 1. From idea to first iteration, run one cohort, capture your learnings and recommend whether we should take them into a scaled version. Your programs are highly experiential in nature with the main outcome being to learn as much as possible in the process.

About the Role

Over the past year, Startmate has gone from running one program to 5 programs across operators, founders and investors. In 2022, we want to triple that again and launch 10 new programs that will allow us to reach new audiences and play a meaningful (and much-needed) role in creating diverse talent pools for the ANZ startup ecosystem.

In this role, you’ll play a fundamental role in launching and running these MVPrograms. You’ll work closely with…

  • The Media Team - to access new audiences and funnel them into applying for the programs

  • The Head of Programs and other Program Leaders - to create the strategy and design the new programs,

  • The Ops Team - who will support you in creating the back end systems and processes you need to launch the programs, and of course

  • The Product Team - a core outcome of the programs is to help operators land jobs. You’ll sync up with our hiring product team to make sure there is a smooth transition from program to platform

  • The customers - the communities that we will be building!

Here is a brief overview of some examples of work you will commandeer:

  • Application and selection: for each of the new programs, we want to work with the top talent from areas that don’t have a natural pathway into tech. It will be your job to work with the media team to identify, attract and select these incredible people

  • Program design: leaning on our learnings from our other programs, you will help design a world-class experience based on the key program outcomes.

  • Community building: When the programs are running, you’ll be the centre of gravity for these communities - facilitating sessions, forging meaningful relationships and finding scalable ways to help everyone achieve their goals. The key outcomes here will be people in jobs and learning about the customer segment.

Position Requirements

Your background is less important than the key skills, which might include:

  • Elite communicator: as you will have seen above, this role is going to operate as the coordinator of many different stakeholders and moving parts. We need a confident, proactive communicator who is going to be able to navigate the complexities that come with this.

  • Customer empathy: Our programs regularly have NPS scores of 75+ and whilst this is ambitious for MVPs, we want you to be the custodian of the communities we’re building programs and represent their best interests. This includes being able to conduct user research and make decisions based on this.

  • Scaling/experimental mindset: This role is highly experimental - so it’s going to have a lot of failure inherent to it! You’ve got to be comfortable operating within this ambiguity, being structured in the way you hypothesise, test these theories and learn from them.

  • Program knowledge: We would love for you to have some sort of understanding of running programs/managing products - this is really going to allow you to hit the ground running!

We’re looking for someone who is as passionate as us about making Australia and New Zealand the best places in the world to start and grow a company. You must have a high ownership mentality and the ability to take responsibility for goals and outcomes.

This role is fully remote anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. We currently have an office in Melbourne with satellite offices in Sydney and Auckland.

  • Flexibility: We are a remote-first team with coverage across Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Noosa and New Zealand. We currently have an office in Melbourne with satellite offices in Sydney and Auckland.

  • Access: You get to work with every well known and less well-known Australian and Kiwi startup, VC and angel — Canva, Safety Culture, Propeller, Vend, Xero, Blackbird, Square Peg, AirTree, rampersand, Folklore — you name it!

  • Great vibes: Being able to bring your best self to work is really important to us. We index heavily on wellbeing and engagement to make sure that you’re able to turn up with energy and resilience each day.

  • A share of Startmate’s success: We think it is important to share successes with the whole team. All Startmate employees receive carry in our funds and are owners in the management company.
