Job Description

Alaska Drivers provide safe transportation for students, staff, and faculty to and from the field in a variety of vehicles. Drivers will travel to remote trail heads all over the state in buses, vans and trucks with trailers. Drivers will also assist in maintenance and cleanliness of the vehicle fleet.

What does a Driver do?

  • Perform thorough pre and post trip inspections of vehicles

  • Carry a gas card and/or credit card and manage monthly expense tracking for the use of these cards

  • Ensure vehicles are loading with necessary food, equipment, and supplies before each drive

  • Drive NOLS courses to various locations around Alaska

  • Drop and retrieve equipment at various locations

  • Maintain clean and professional condition of vehicles

  • Stage vehicles and prepare them for departure

  • Ensure a positive, safe driving environment to and from the field

  • Train less experienced drivers as necessary

What makes a great Driver at NOLS?

For this position, we are seeking a person who is detail oriented and strives to provide safe and professional transportation to/from the field.

  • Must possess a Class C CDL and be willing to apply for temporary State of Alaska CDL for use during Summer Season

  • Possess basic mechanical aptitude and ability to consistently perform pre-trip mechanical inspection of vehicles, as well as manage minor roadside mechanical issues.

  • Able to work independently, be attentive to details, and resourceful.

  • Excellent driving skills and willingness to complete NOLS Defensive Driver Training

  • Willing to work flexible hours that include some overnight drivers, weekends, and holidays

  • Desire to interact with NOLS students, faculty, and in-town staff.

  • Eager to live and work in a small community that shares responsibility for maintaining common areas.

  • Be 21 years of age - NOLS Insurance requires drivers to be at least 21 years old
