What you will be doing

Historic England has an important role in the delivery of time-limited programmes of grant funding for the conservation of the historic environment, on behalf of a range of government departments. The organisation has a range of expert building professionals, but it is sometimes necessary to supplement this capacity to successfully deliver these programmes.

In this role, as part of Historic England’s Regions Group, you will use both your expert technical knowledge and your excellent interpersonal skills to advise on and develop sustainable proposals for the repair and re-use of traditional buildings, that are considered to be at risk. You will join a central team working nationally alongside colleagues in six regional offices to deliver grant programmes that will repair and conserve all types of built heritage.

You will be able to have a direct impact on the conservation of our national heritage by working with owners and communities to find sustainable solutions for traditional buildings. It is also an invaluable opportunity to work alongside Historic England expert staff, with whom you will be able to exchange skills and knowledge.

Please note that this role:

  • will require regular travel to sites which may not be serviced by public transport.

  • may require visiting/inspecting sites where climbing scaffolding and negotiating confined spaces will be necessary.

  • may require attendance at community meetings, which are often held at evenings or weekends.

Who we are looking for

  • Professional qualification with current Architects Registration Board/Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors/MChartered Institute of Architectural Technologists registration, or equivalent qualifications from other countries that are accepted by those professional bodies.

  • Extensive experience of the repair, alteration and adaption of traditional buildings, and of design in an historic context.

  • Extensive experience of specifying works to upgrade traditional buildings to meet current regulations and standards.

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of historic building conservation as exemplified in Conservation Principles, and familiarity with current issues affecting historic buildings and the historic environment.

  • Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.

Please note your application will be scored and assessed against the above criteria.
